If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great. Both windscreen wipers were working on starting weekend camping trip but the left one stopped working. It moves very slightly when the right one is working. Also from looking at the Haynes manual I think they are out of alignment as when they are stationary the tips are nearly touching the paintwork?
By the way I am a total beginner so if you think I should take it to the garage I won't be offended.
Sounds to me as if the left wiper arm is probably slipping on the spindle.
There is a plastic plug (cover) over the retaining nut which holds the arm onto the spindle.(shaft that drives it) Pop the plug out, unscrew the nut a turn or so, and line up the arm that carries the blade, to the correct position. (70 mm about 3 inches from the bottom edge of the windscreen, in the parked position)
Then tighten the nut up again, (firmly but do not overtighten), give them a try, and pop the plug back in when you are happy with them.
Do not operate them on a dry windscreen is the usual rule.
All in the Haynes (page 12.11 item 15 in my book.)

Unclip (or prise off) the black plastic dome that sits on the bottom of the wipers where they go into the bodywork. Underneath you will see a small nut on a thread. Align wiper to be parallel with bottom of window and simply tighten nut with a socket, 10mm I believe. Should solve the problem hopefully.
Do the same with the other one if you want to realign it but undo the nut and wiggle the wiper arm to free up the tapered fitting first!

I'm Not A Complete Idiot... Some Bits Are Missing!
i had the same prob due to the splines wearing out on the arm, so cleaned all the old bits of metal dust out and nipped up the nut tighter, although it has been fine for a good while, its basically a bit of a bodge and needs replacing really, sort of thing that's likely to fail when you most need it. i'd forgot about it 'til i read this!
