Revs to the max...stu

Hi All,
Our van sports a five speed gearbox and running gear is standard wheels with newish tyres.

Is there a club member who can give me the equivalent speedo readings for mid to just under peak revs (what's the max revs too?) for 3rd 4th and 5th gear on my 1.9 dg.... to help run in rebuild?

eg 3rd gear level road.. 2500-3500rpm equals 35-50 mph. I'm making this up so go with the flow. A generalisation is all I need.

I want to get it right this time 8)

Ok... In mine, and I am not sayng I did it correctly, I would drive in the following manner (standing by to be told off!!!)

first gear....only ever really used for pulling away / moving off....usually pretty much straight into 2nd.

I had a rev counter on mine (interesting question...will that be compatible with the new 2.1?) and always tried to drive within the green zone, to of which is abut 3,500 revs if I remember correctly (is away at mo, so can't look for you). In fifthe gear, on open road, speedo inficating 65, pulling 3200 revs. Usually changed gear around the 2500 mark. But that is very general!! Coz like most people, I change the gear when it feels and sounds ready!! How the hell do you explain that??

The 1.9 DG had a 5400 rev governor fitted originally. So don't go hitting it yet Stu.
There is a sweet spot on every engine where you can cruise with your foot feathering the gas pedal. Best economy and least wear at that point.

I am. It's the van that's watercooled :wink: BOOM BOOM! Sorry, but just couldn't resist that one.

As the throw between first and second gear in our van is about the size of a cricket pitch I tend to gather a bit more speed before changing to second gear. I always check the rear view mirror at the same time. I love the look of terror on the face of the driver behind, as they gather too much momentum, unexpectingly getting real close before backing off. :shock: That a big backside to hit. Especially with a towbar. Smirk smirk...
I know exactly what you mean. Change gear when it feels right to do so.
I just thought it best to have a rough guide. Sometimes the engine is so quiet and wind noise deflects an accurate reading of when to change.
What a luxury..having a rev counter!

Thanks for the advice. Will keep to your suggestions :wink:

We covered 100 miles today and she felt great. As if a breath of cool oxygenated fresh air had been injected directly into her carb. Not a sign of sluggishness, whatsoever. Crisp and exhillarating. Well, as much as a T25 can be. Lovely.
It felt sooooooo good to be back on the road.
