The auto box fitted to the 2ltr cu has a diffrential unit which is filled with EP 80 gear oil and the automatic gearbox filled with A.T.F fluid dextron .The autobox is reliable but problems can occur over time with A.T.F fluid contaminating the diffrential unit filled with gear oil. This is caused by the seals between the two unit failing. The dextron A.T.F should be red but is some times dark brown this is due to burning & the effects of heat of a worn box.The fluid level should checked on level ground & the engine started this the allows the torque convertor to fill up .The sump seals some times leak but are replacable & inside the autobox there is a gauze filter which can be cleaned .Its best to check the fluid levels & look at the colour as this will tell you some think about its condition .But saying that i had a automatic 2ltr cu of which i replaced the box for a used second hand one.It leaked fluid and the diffrential part of the box had a.t.f contamination but it changed and held gears on steep inclines without slipping.

I changed the autobox on my Aircooled for a watercooled one and the oil cooler at the back had to come off as it fouled the crossmember. Waterboxers have a different shape crossmember to the Aircooled one, so I had to bypass it with a pipe between the 2 banjo connectors, but now I have a normal radiator type oil cooler to fit. As far as reliable goes, my old box did let go, but to be fair I think I should have changed the oil more often than the no times I actually did! The current one has had 2 changes since I put it in at christmas and it feels a lot better than my old box ever did. It's my engine thats now gone.
