Mines J831 LHD. It had escaped to south London when I found it but I brought it back up north. Acording to the DVLA J832 LHD and 833 were also syncros (serounded in the dealers yard by T4's and MAN trucks), as were some of the high 20's, though 832 hasn't been taxed since about 1995 so I don't think that had a happy life. Basicly for any given numberplate sequance you can pritty much count on there being atleast 5 others in that batch with almost consecutive plates. Must have had a good fleet of them! A very significant proportion of the RHD diesel vans I suspect.
I've seen an H reg one on a yorkshire numberplate too - L90D paint, full bulkhead, turbo diesel, air vents in body, round lamps, hole in roof for warning becon/arial, holes in dash for 2 way radio and NOTHING else - the usual spec, though many have now deveated from this formular
Was speaking to someone (mountain biker type) at the NEC a couple of weeks ago who were driving a Caravelle syncro, one of the guys in it sayd he had one aswell, but it was a diesel van and was off the road having a new gearbox (so I'm not the only one then!), humm I wonder who had that new.
Would love to see a picture of one when in service, someone must have one somewhere.
If you really want to trace a vehicles history, you can send a form to the DVLA stating your the current owner and request all the info they have on it. Basicly they'll send you back a photo copy of every V5/V5C they have issued for that vehicle, so any amendments to its spec or the owner will be recorded. I think the form is called V888 and costs about a fiver - use the freedom of information act to make the DVLA get off their a***
.
I used to walk past G41 OAG every morning on the way to uni, I would have bought if I got the chance but I never cought the owner with it. Never mind, plenty more where that came from as it happens.

As far as I know they all came from LCW in Hipperholm, Halifax.
LCW was part of lightcliffe VW.
LCW is now defunct, but most of the staff live on at West Yorkshire Van centre at Cleckheaton.
Dunno if they would have any records tho.
I used to look after a few, obiously being so close, they were a pretty common sight around here.
Usual spec was J plate 1.6TD L90D panel van with bulkhead, and lots of holes drilled in the dash.
The bloke that used to run the Huddersfield and district VW club, Steve Bradbury bought 3 I think when they sold them off, he had one converted into a camper, one is kicking around with green stickers (Syncro G?) and the other went to his mate who lived in birkby, John I think his name was.
Then, the other I know of was owned by Sink Crow Man on here, forgotten his real name but that was one i did lots of work on at one of my older jobs, he sold that recently, it had a window cut into it and a camperish interior.

<<< Yep thats mine, Aparently it used to belong to the local green party candidate, which probubly explains the green stickers - I find it amusing he still wanted people to know it was 4WD but he obveously loved it enough to give it a new VC. Come campain time it was driven around with speakers on the roof aparently!
Just noticed that OAG is an odd one as its a Hull reg rather than Huddersfield, maybe they came from another dealer? Make sense if they came out of a different depot atleast.
When I got mine I went to my local VW dealer to see what they had on it, they didn't have much info but could tell me who sold it and who to. What the engine number was, any recall work and stuff like that. There were lots of fields about serviceing left blank on the computer so maybe that info wasn't recorded back then? WOuld have thought a fleet vehicle would atleast have been serviced by someone, though how much attention it actully got who knows. My Dad once had a Ford Escort company car serviced by a main Birmingham ford dealer, when it came to be sold on they found it had never had a serviced in its life - every 6 months it went into the dealer and sat there till colection as the dealer though it was owned by GKN Sankey and they wouldn't notice and just pay the bill - perhaps they wern't too wrong as they always invoiced GKN who did pay the bill, but it wasn't one of their cars! At least dad never payed for the service it never got.

Didn't know they had singlecabs aswell. When was that built/registered? I thought all K plates were registered a while after build but mine is a J, registered soon after being built in early 92 so it knew where it was going, ordered specally no doubt. Its actully a much younger van than Aidan's K plate. Wonder if they wanted a pickup or wether the surply finally dried up and thats all was left?
As far as bad conversions goes in mine some idiot has hacked the backing ducts off the vents where the rear windows would go - anoying as they now let in rain. Apears to have been bonded to the outer pannel so one day if I can find a pannel cut? Always asumed that wasn't a yorks water bodge (unlike towbar, hole in roof, holes in dash, holes in rear deck).
From what I can find, if you find a certain combindation of letters used on a yorks water van (mine being J***LHD series (an ironic number for a RHD van!)) there will probubly be at least 5 vans in that series, nearly but not always sequential). Keep meaning of making a list when I see them but can't be bothered yet.
Thinking of which, how many of you have "syncro" or "transporter" on your V5C? Mine claims its a "Syncro Transporter D" but I'm sure my dads 87 2wd caravelle didn't really have a model description, maybe they only bothered on later vans? Resion I ask is should be possable to ask DVLA to surch how many syncros they have still on the road, though thats obveously not accurate if not all are recorded under that name. Anyone think LHD syncros takeing over in the UK yet?

Converted by a viking
Glen i'm glad i'm not the only one who bought a viking conversion - some idiot did some serious hacking to mine also, ie the panel for door window done with a tin opener - in fact most panel butchery he did that way- the water tank imploded when you tried to fill it - the most serious though were the gas fittings if any one had tried to use them then exploded it would have for sure- if that did'nt kill ya then the fridge would of - the first thing i did was check it all out when i bought it - thankfully . History the water board must of liked it as it seems they had it for about 8 years, the Viking / hacker had it 1 year sold to a pig farmer who stored it in a pig barn for 2 years thats where i found it
But hey we love it ,camp all year with it -off to Builth Wells this weekend with a bucket full of mulled wine
