Merc Iglhaut conversion

Post by syncroandy »

I was driving the pickup in Kendal today and noticed a huge hulking silver Merc van which clearly was Westfalia conversion of some sort, and on a second glance seemed to have seriously lifted suspension. I pulled over and noticed the owner walking away, after a few seconds we recognised each other, it was Stuart Signol, who I'd met at Vanfest a couple of years ago. Mudlark now owns Stuarts previous camper, a Syncro 16" Westie which notably has trekked the length of South America.

We spent a bit of time chatting. The 'James Cook' Merc is a serious bit of kit. He bought it in 2WD form, and had it converted to 4WD by Iglhaut. It has a 160PS motor, permanent 4WD with front, rear and centre difflocks, semi-auto transmission with a low-range box. Apparently it uses some G-wagen components.

After we said goodbye, we headed off together toward the A65. I could just about keep up and we hit 85 on the dual carriageway, I got the impression he had a bit more go left..

PS. I also got a few pics of the underside if anyones interested ;-)

I think what i paid for the Westy was a 10% deposit on this :D

If Stu approached this the same way as he did when he bought and respecified the Westy it will be a fine bit of kit.
