Engine revs when in neutral

Post by tigsbirman »

On idle its around 1000 but when driven and put into neutral or park the revs shoot up to over 2000. How and what do I adjust?

Am at teccy weekend but want to get this sorted before I drive all the way there really.

Oh - its a 2.1DJ auto box

Many thanks

might be the throttle cable is getting hung up somewhere? if you pull the accell pedal up when it happens does it drop back down? dont do it whilst you are driving as the accel pedal can pop off if lifted with too much force, pops back of easily but best not to do whilst driving) I replaced my cable and all was sweet cable was rusty in the tube and wasn't running smoothly.

Hi Bob - yes it seems to. But it's bizarre that when I stop it's just over 1k then as soon as in neutral it jumps up to over 2? Do you think it likely it's a throttle cable prob then

Your auto box may also play a part in this as it's effectively 'out of gear' when in neutral and park. When in drive it is (via the gearbox torque converter) connected to the wheels and is attempting to move the van which places a load on the engine and lowers the revs...............I think

Will it move with your foot off the pedal and with no brakes on?

I have a similar problem, but I'm too lazy to do anything.
Revs about 1000 in drive 1400 in Neutral or Park.
Will move slowly off in gear without any throttle. (gathering pace before stopping against the nearest wall / parked car etc)

Pulling the accelerator up doesent help.

Idle set too high, or mixture set too rich, or blocked air filter.....timing might be relevant too but last resort that one - well, it is to me.

lack of use!
give the throttle cable some wd40 down from each end then work the pedle up and down a few times, should solve it...... it could be the throttle body too, give it some lubrication too.......

and dont use my van as a stopper when you get there!!
