What is this?

Post by suedehead »

Excuse my ignorance but I was wondering what this part of my engine is and what it does.

The end part that clips on had been taken off when it had some work done and the garage had forgotton to put it back on. There was loads of smoke and the engine got all hot so I put clipped it on and it was happy again.

That would be the air filter.

The bit that clips on and off is a cyclone dust trap (bit like on a Dyson vacuum cleaner) and can be emptied every now and then.

The actual air filter bit is further back inside the big, black cylinder.

Thanks Peasant, kinda thought it must be something like that because of the amount of smoke that appeared when it wasn't on.

Thats an extra "cyclone" air filter that syncros got, or for vehicles designed for use in a dusty climate.
more likely to be a syncro tho.
