power steering

Post by GAML »

Hello
I've got a 1987 2.1 dj caravelle with power steering. One of the long pipes from the steering rack to the pump has sprung a leak. I'm surprised it has lasted this long as they are both very rusty.
The local VW garage has quoted £220 to supply the 2 pipes.
Any advice on a cheaper alternative would be welcome.
I'm based in Kent.
Must add that I have taken the belt off the pump and in someways find it better to drive but my small wife needs some spinach before she takes it out!

Thanks
Graham

there's a book about camper conversions and in it, they fit an aftermarket ZF power steering rack to a T25, and use flexible hoses made up to suit, the place mentioned above, or any hydraulic suppliers in the yellow pages should be able to make some up if you take em the old ones to look at and measure up, prob for alot less money than genuine parts. mine are looking a bit rusty, must look at em properly and maybe get some grease or waxoyl on them

just kampers sell it, its in their catalogue and on their website 'how to conv your T25/T4 into a camper' or summat like that, it mostly deals with interior stuff but also fitting a hitop, plumbing and gas etc, dont think there is all that much about mechanical stuff tho, but all that is in haynes really. not a bad book.

Just as a thought, I have been thinking about converting to electric power steering using a Corsa electric steering column, it seems to be a conversion used on a few vehicles so should be do-able on a T25.Anyone had a go yet?
