1Y.. is it worth it?

I'm picking up a Danbury with a 1.6D fitted at weekend

Rough as a badgers backside, but all there and all right.

Thing is, the 1.6D is slooooow

Is the 1Y the solution here?, or should I be looking at TD engines.. from what I gather this means a TD gearbox as well, which doesn't come in cheap.

Ideally, I'd like more torque.. I'd stick some bigger wheels and taller tyres on the back end of it to increase the "legs" but if I do that now, I think the poor 1.6 would have a fit at the first sign on a slight incline!

If I can cruise along at 60-70mph I'll be more than happy, and living in Rutland, I do encounter a few long, steep hills

The 1Y will give you that.

Don't expect awesome power, but i noticed the difference from my 1.7d.

what are the torque/bhp figures of the 1.6D (not turbo)? anyone know?

At the moment I think it's doing about 4krpm at 60 mph!, hence looking at taller rubber, but at the same time, I don't want to make it un-drivable.

Where does the 1Y make it's torque from?, what's the peak bhp?

1.6D is 50bhp at 4200 revs. and 103 Nm at 2000 revs.
1.7D is 57bhp at 4500 revs. and 103 Nm at 2800 revs.
1.6TD is 70bhp at 4500 revs. and 138 Nm at 2500 revs.
(all rated when they were new and not 20 years old)

1Y allegedly 70bhp (non turbo 1.9)
1Z allegedly 90bhp (turbo 1.9)

1Y is 64bhp but much better drive ability than the 1.6.

1.9td does not need gear ratio changes.

just to add to the thread,

How can you achieve a better motorway crusing speed ie: 70 + without increasing the revs so much that you use too much fuel?

Would changing the ratio of the highest gear ie: 5th gear to a taller one do this?

My 1Y crusied from Cornwall to bristol airport at about 55 - 60 mph all the way, but didn't want to push it to much beyond that. Can they take a good reving??

Fuel consumption is much more than just a matter of revs...

Its finding the optimum point on the torque curve, noting that drag goes up hilarioulsy with speed (roughly square law)

Nah! Unless you have itsy weeny little wheels, 4,571 F/D sounds a bit high geared to me for a draggy T25, IMO with a 1Y

sounds ok to me if tyres are around standard diameter, 70 will be a problem on steap hills.

Excuse my ignorance but what is a 1Y?
