What starter motor do you dudes use for a Kenedy adaptered and flywheeled 2.2 conversion. Its a manual using an 091- 4 speed trans.
The standard 0.7kw starter wont touch it more than 2 slow turns.
Is the 86- 90 starter (9.5kw) the one to use? Dont seem much of an increase to me. Cheers.Mark.

Whats in yours then mate? is it a standard one from an Aircooled 2 litre or a 2.1 wasserboxer? Have you done the conversion?
The 0.7kw and 9,5kw figures came from a Lucas starter motor trade book. so I can only assume it to be correct.
The starter turns a 2.0 aircooler fine.

Using the bell housing means you use the Subaru starter motor which is suited to the application where as the VW starter is not.
Reasons being the flywheel on the subaru engine is much larger and the compression ratio is higher leading to much higher torque to start the engine which has led to starter motors on adaptor plate conversions burning out.
Also the bolts do not go far enough into engine which eventually leads to breakages or strains.
Yea thats right I have written the figures down wrong,it should be 0.7 and 0.95kw...Doh! it was late in the day.
Anyone recomend any starter motor solutions other than a very expensive bell housing or £285. for a hi torque starter motor from rip off s.s.p?
Cheers for the replys fellas.

Nicked from another forum for you.
got to bet to differ on that one, mines been converted for 4 years and not one bolt has broken plus i use a standard vw starter motor and it works fine, never burnt it out, thats a certain firm saying that theres is the best and plates arnt etc!!!!!
Markscoot i dont know what starter i have on mine but it just a standard vw item nowt special or uprated!!
Have you checked the condition of the cable from the battery to the starter might be that thats at fault?

Scooby is on the floor of the shed.I have used a lorry battery and a 25mm 500mm long cable.Slill no joy. The starter turns over a 2.0 aircooler well.
James, are you using the Kenedy adapter plate with the 200mm flywheel? What motor came out of your bus,was it a 2.1 wasserboxer and are you using the starter from it? This is more powerful than mine I have found out 0.95kw as opposed to mine at 0.7kw.

I've got a tsr dragracers conversion plate and clutch use the 1.9 starter motor that was fitted on the original engine! The only thing i did find was i needed to fit a new bearing on the end of the starter shaft as the starter was fouling on the teeth, as for my battery i have a diesel battery fitted as i have in every car i have ever had i like the extra bit of cranking power

Hi mine is a standard VW starter too and a TSR convertion with the adapter plate. WHat I am experiencing a year after the convertion is that the srarter is whining when i start up the van. I think dry bearings maybe. I am wondering if I should get the starter replaced or just have the bearings/bushes done?
Sounds like its gonna pack in with the strain.Ive heard that the VW starter is ok but is on its limit.
Ive now got a Hi Torque one from Kenedy Eng in the States and is brilliant.
Cheers.

I have a Kenedy adapter plate, bought the engine with it. Done loads of reserch and it seems that there are no other choices.VW starters will start the engine but as I said are under strain with the Subaru coz the flywheel radius is smaller.
I spoke at length with Richard Jones at RJES, this is why he makes a bell housing so he can use the Subaru starter.Nice bloke, knows his stuff.
I tried to build up oil pressure using a new VW 2.1 starter with a large new battery and short leads, the starter failed to turn engine after a medium amount of turns and got hot.
My solution was to buy a Hi Torque IMI- 104 one from Kenedy @ $225.00 which is about £160.00 delivered. New VW 2.1 wasserboxer Bosch item is £140.00. No contest.
Cheers.
