Tailgate Window/Seal

I have a 1981 LH drive diesel camper, goes by the name of 'Henry'.
have just purchased from reputable dealer a new seal, have taken seal to reputable VW Camper garage which is now tearing it's collective hair out as the window + new seal do not fit the tailgate aperture!.
Seems that the lip for the seal is too deep. Either it needs to be ground down or I fork out for another tailgate.
Has anyone out there experienced a similar problem.

You can have problems with aftermarket parts not being made accurately--take yer old seal to compare with new & git yer dosh back-or see if theyve got a better fitting one---I did once hear of problems refitting a back window 'cos tailgate got distorted by a heavily laden bike rack--also its possible that early tailgates were slightly different from later ones--
