TD- Starting problems when hot

Post by Chilla »

Anyone know why my 1.9td starts fine when cold and the heater plugs come on but doesn't like starting from hot or warm and turns over and over and eventually fires up. The heater plugs dont come when warm or hot is this right?
advice appreciated....thanks!

There is a thermal switch that cuts out the plugs when the motor is hot, as they shouldn`t be needed. I`ve seen one or two (maybe they all do it?) with this, my 1.6TD does it.

I`ve got round this problem by disconnecting the wire from the thermal switch (it`s a blue/white wire on the water outlet stub on the back of the cylinder head), and fastening it out of the way so it won`t short. The glow plugs will come on at any time now, hot or cold. From cold I turn the ignition on, the glowplug light comes on, I count to 10 and then start it as usual. When hot, I switch on, give it 2 or 3 seconds then start it, works every time :)
Keep it real.

I have the same problem.
When mines hot after a run I will turn it over and pull the cold start out and she always fires up at a flick of the switch. Other wise she turns and turns and turns.

I`ll try that cold-start trick with the wire reconnected, see if it cures mine.

Just to let you guys know the issue I had was with a poorly timed pump. Timed the pump today and starts much better now that every things in sync.

Hi Chilla, do you reckon you fixed your starting-when-hot issue by giving your pump timing more advance ?

Hi
not really, my pump was timed too far advanced about 120mm I think bringing it back has definately helped the hot starting issue the smoothness has improved markedly tho'
