Oil loss from diesel 1.9 1Y engine???

Post by fergus77 »

Hey all, have had the van running now for a couple of weeks, just ironing out all the little bugs in it, and one problem that keeps popping up is the oil leak.

Changed the rocker cover gasket and that stopped one of them, but i still seem to be losing a lot of oil. There's always a trail and puddle when i pull into a car parking bay at tesco etc.

There seem to be a bit of pressure build up in the crankcase but can this cause a series oil loss?
The back a**se of the van is all peppered in oil marks and the same goes for the right hand side of the engine.

Is there any other gasket or seal down that side that may cause a leak of this sort?

Had to top her up with nearly 2Litres the other day

Careful mate, that`s nearly half the oil capacity you`re running without

Does it smoke when cold? Does it chuff like a steam train from the engine breather system?
Keep it real.

I take it its not your sump?

Oil filter housing?

Hope its something simple!

Good luck

eyup duck,i had two really major ones on my 1y,the first was the rocker cover and that left oil spots on the back of the van,i ended up fitting the rocker gasket with some industrial strength silicone sealer(used for wagons!),that was a real gusher, the other is something i cant seem to solve,it leaks from the big plastic pipe that runs from the cylinder head to the block at the side of the oil filter, changed the o rings used gasket seal, still leaked,so i just live with it....only looses a cup full every couple of months

I know, freaked the hell out of me when i noticed how much she took

Engine smokes a bit on startup from cold but not a burnt oil smoke, more a grey smoke but clears within 10 sec and then runs like a dream from then on. Dosn't smoke at all when warm and really does run sweet.

I'll have to check the sump gasket and filter housing to see if any of them could be suspect, so i'll have to get the pressure washer out and wash that side down.

problem is it only seems to happen when i'm driving, so i'l have to do a bit of checking for drips, after a run and a clean engine

If its leaking that much get under the van after a run and you should be able to see where it is dripping from.
Another good thing to find an oil leak is to go to halfwits and buy a can of Gunk, not the Aerasol version the paint on one.
Splash it all over and wash with a hose, any new leaks will be clearly visable, just dont power blast anything electrical.

Cheers lhd, not a bad plan.

Has anybody any idea about the sealing ring that goes around the base of the dipstick where it enters the top of the sump via the block?

Mines is missing and could do with sealing it up to eliminate one more fault. Would good ole instant gasket do the trick?

Bit of silicone should do. If you`ve got a lot of crankcase pressure then it may be blowing out of the dipstick fitting, but you shouldn`t really have that much pressure going on, have you got a breather mushroom on the top of the cambox lid like the old JX has? Where is your crankcase breather plumbed into?
Keep it real.

Yeah, it has that mushroom tyre thing fastened to the rocker cover, but checked all the breather pipe work for blockages and it was all clear. The only other pipe work on the breather system is a pipe running from the mushroom bit to the inlet manifold, a assume for sucking in hot gas.
I'll give the old silicone trick a try.
Power washed the the engine yesterday and got it nice and clean, took it for a run and still the oil was dripping out. Seemed to have pooled in the block casting just below the dip stick tube and running down that side of the sump

Take the pipe off the mushroom with the engine running, if you`ve got a lot of pressure / oil vapour then that`s probably the issue with the oil loss (apart from some leaks) bad crankcase pressure will force oil vapour down the breather system where it gets burnt off.
Keep it real.

Hey Westy.Club.Joker,

Sealed up the gap between the dipstick and where it enters the block/sump and would you believe, no oil leak :D :D

Took it for a testdrive after doing it and usually when i pulled in anywhere you could see the drops leading up to the puddle under the van, and now nothing.

Time to fix everything else in it now
