Have experience very same problem with my 2.1 auto. Cannot say for sure what cured mine but I did all thes and the problem has been gone 12 months now. First clean out the idle stabilisation valve (isv). Common problem item and a good clean with brake cleaner or something similar makes it like new again. Then behind o/s rear light there is a black control unit box with a load of wires going into it. ( you need to remove light to gain access)Unplug block connector and make sure no terminals are corroded and are making a good contact. Then refit plug and unit and try. Other likely causes could be filter blocked, fuel pump relay, fuel pump etc. Try the simple cheaper options first as normally most problems are easily fixed. Hope this helps.

had similar probs with ours. has been the fuel filter on more than one occasion. 1stly id check that there is only one filter, there is one on the tank outlet, if one is fitted in the engine bay then the last owner probably never found the one underneath, in which case it is probably full of crud

throttle body switch ? When hot doesn't close at idle so stabiliser circuit doesn't come in, can only be checked properly in fault state, check also that idle sytem hasn't been bypassed and set up tweeked to run without it, will then be pants when hot.
