2.1 SS Running problems

Post by horlix »

Calling all T25 Gurus!!.. Ok i have a 1990 Westy with a 2.1 SS engine (thats the badboy with the cat/lambda sensor on it). I ve noticed recently that the van is sluggish when pulling off and feels quite lumpy, i dont notice it so much on a motorway although yesterday it juddered a few times doing around 65mph. When you dab the accelerator it splutters and then its fine, revs drop to 850-900 and the same again. Ive replaced the plugs HT leads, fuel filter but its still the same, ive ordered a new coil just incase and will fit that tomorrow. Wondering if the Lambda is causing the problems?, the air sensor?, the co adjustment?, idle adjustment...
I would be really interested to talk to anyone who has any ideas or who owns this style of engine.......seems well too complicated for little old me... :) Heres hoping someonecan help!!

Have you tried replacing the coolant temp sensor. Can give loads of running problems. Only about £10-£15. Wouldn't have though lambda probe would have such an effect on the overall running . Have you checked the exhaust emissions? The reading from this would help point you a direction as to what is at fault.

lambda is major and gives all sorts of problems, but unlikely in this case, to be honest not enough to go on, the only course of action is to go through the dijifant procedure and the running issues guide from VW which are posted on Vanagon and are in Bentley, sytematically go through the system before you start swapping out things that you don't understand.
Don't assume anything is good or bad or it could be that, follow the test procedures, you should then identify the problem.
General problem on fifteen plus year old vehicle is corrosion of connections and bad earths leading to poor signal and ecu confusion.
Good luck

Thanks for the help guys, I have been all over the van this week looking at possibilities and the only issue i can find is that NO3 injector is not delivering a cone spray as descibed in the Bentley manual. Its giving a jet. Would this contribute to poor running, i am going to change it when i can source one.
