fog light dilema!

Need fog light done for MOT, the one already fitted doesnt seem to work (i popped a new bulb in, and the other side as the pcb seemed wired up)

Im not sure on the wiring for VW's, feed etc etc.

can anyone give me some tips where to start..pretty please!

took a look ta, i then took off both clusters at the rear and it seems fog lights were never fitted....cos where the bulbs go, there is no metal connection spring loaded, so if you do pop a bulb in, it rattles loose....

I guess im going have to fit a unit and wire it up somewhere...

also...does anyone have locally a water bottle pump motor i can borrow, either to see if i have faulty wiring, or if it is the unit, just for the day of the MOT (i hope next week)

Which begs the question how did the van pass earlier MOTs?
Is it a case of fog light not required because of the year of reg.?
Or even only required to work if fitted?

Windscreen washer pump live feed is green / red wire. earth is brown and goes to the cluster of earths near the fuse box. Have you got a multimeter, or even a bulb and wire to check for feed?

Well its a German one, i think a 83. Not had a MOT but got a recent TUEV

not a MM..i was going to try and hold a bulb to the wires but need a 2nd person to pull the lever...

Tie or tape the lever back.

I belive in centre or to the right...i belive it was cars over 79 that had to have them i had a 78 with none and a 79 had, both were identical cars

The inspection of rear fog lamps is confined to the one rear fog lamp which is required to be fitted to the centre or offside of vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1980.

Correct from my understanding, I am told the 'LED' is a filament type bulb, but cannot confirm this.

Corect, its a bulb, type 286 I think. Only works on the second stage of the switch, ie only when the rear fog is on.

Jules, if you want a hand with wireing them up I'll give you a hand. I've got "pooh" loads of suitable wireing (some colours are on 100m rolls!) and loads of conectors (not nesiserally the right ones though) kicking around and probubly an almost apropreate wireing diagram (useful for finding where the bits of your foglamp wireing that VW bothered to fit might be lerking, if your lucky). That bit shouldn't be too dificult, you might need a new right hand light cluster with foglamp innards inside though, a UK breaker should have plenty.

i thought mine wasn't working til i realised it's only designed to come on when using dipped headlights thats where it gets its feed from

Hi Sheffield. I have a european Van & sorted the Fog-Light-On-Wrong-Side issue without having to buy any additional light cluster. I hope this makes sense...

In my case I had to locate the wire that powered the Fog Light on the Left-Hand side. Once I found it I pulled it out of the set of sockets that plug into the Light Cluster. I then attached a longer length of wire to that & secured it across my engine bay, following a few other wires heading that way. Shoved the connector bit into the set of sockets on the right. That sorted the Power-To-Fog-Light problem.

I had already removed the left-hand lenses & the right-hand lenses.

I removed the left-hand light cluster - turned it upside down & then installed it into the RIGHT-hand side.

I turned the right-hand cluster - turned that upside down & then put this one on the left-hand side.

I then made sure that all bulbs were in their correct place & put the lenses back on. Fog Light works perfectly.

Passed MOT.

I had the wire lying around & was able to reuse the old connector, so it should cost you almost nothing for this.

Oh, and to test my setup: because all bulbs were nicely housed in their clusters, all I needed to do was start her up, turn on the lights & switch on the Fog Light.

One person job. Nearly choked on my diesel fumes, mind...
