Firstly ley me explain, i've got a 1988 caravelle that should run a 2.1 but whoever had the van before me put in a 1.9 and used the 2.1 injection system.
I've just failed the MOT by having a CO2 level of 7.2 but should be 3.6.
I cleaned the plugs, dizzy and took out the air filter, it's got new(ish) HT's on it, i disconnected the fan to get it red hot and put it back on the machine yet it's still 4.7.
So does anyone know how to get this any lower???
also does anyone know who i can take it too for a tune(if that's what's required) in the Preston area?
My golf failed on emissions once and the tester told me there was hardly any fuel in the tank. He told me to go and put a tenners worth in and he'd re test it and it then passed. He said it happens all the time so dont know if it will help bring yours down it might.
1989 2.1 DJ twin slider Devon Microbus, 19Inch Audi RS8 wheels, Avo springs, Bilstein Dampers, smoked lights,
mine almost failed last year mechanic spent ages trying to get it low enough but could only manage to get it slightly above requirment told me to take a wire to dizzy off before going into mot and connect it again after.i did this mot man said it was just over the limit and to give it a slight rev which did the trick it seams to be a problem on these old girls ,it maybe the air emissions valve mechanic said.
just ask them to join up the receptionists car for the co2 test I mean you are only doing a couple of thousand miles a year arn't you? what damage can it do.
on a more sensible note, when I had a 1990 volvo it had a catalytic converter, about a year before they were actually required, I was told it would always pass the emissions test because of this and never fail a catalytic converter test because it was pre 1991 and therefore did not need testing, does that mean you can retrospectively fit a catalytic convertor to it?

i'll have a look for a wire on the side of the dizzy.
Found a place to get it tuned too, so hopefully with it hooked up to an emission machine we can tweek until we get it down.
I'm guessing that the 2.1 injection system isn't helping as it'll be fueling for a 2.1 instead of a 1.9, but it passed last year as i have the emission slip from the last MOT.
does anybody know how to change the mixture manually on these injection systems? the haynes manual goes on about by passing this and that resistor, but you need a degree in electronics to understand what their talking about..
already asked him to whack something else on the machine, he didn't look best pleased...
plus if you call 10+ thousand miles, a few thousand a year, then yes it is low mileage.... i think i should plant 6 or so oak tree's to offset my carbon footprint.
My 2.1DJ when first MOT'd by my local friendly garage was a bit over the co limit.
Neither of us being familiar with the type, I walked home the half mile to get the Haynes manual and by the time I got back he had found the adjustor and corrected the mixture. Haynes calls it 'CO (mixture) adjusting screw'.
From Haynes drawing, the adjustor is on the airflow meter on the inlet air hose side (opposite side to air cleaner) and on mine was under a round plastic cap which I believe just needs to be prised out.
If adjusting this does not correct the problem, then there are lots of further checks to find the cause.
Hope this may help.
Mike.

The 2.1 DJ dizzy (as with the 1.9 DG version) only has the plug on the side so, with the obvious exception of the HT leads, there are no wires you can disconnect .
Perhaps he meant a vacuum advance/retard hose instead ?

thanks for the help everyone, i've got it booked in for a JP stainless exhaust on tuesday morning and a tune in the afternoon, i'll be taking it straight to the MOT place after that and we'll see what happens...
If all else fails i'll try the vacum pipe or cross the guys palm with silver..
thanks again and i'll let you all know what worked for future reference.
My Dads DJ Digijet fail its MOT on emissions one year, it was being serviced by a local independant VW specalist at the time and they put it through the MOT at a nearby test centre they usally used. Aparently after it failed the guy plugged something into its brain and made an ajustment untill it passed. Maybe it was just reset? Maybe leaving the battery unplugged overnight might also do this? Whatever he did, being used to that engine he wasn't too surprised it failed and fixed it in minutes.
co mixture adjustment is on the airflow meter. screw out to richen mixture and in to weaken mixture. Might be a anti tamper bunge in hole, just pop out and there is an 5mm allen key, only go 1/2 turn at a time.
