anyone fitted a delaying relay from another vehicle to the courtesy light system? you know the kind of thing, get in, shut the door, light stays on for a few seconds after door is shut while you muck about with keys, etc.
is it tricky to fit such a gizmo? would be quite a natty modification
as said, absolutely no offence meant and hopefully none taken, spose a lot of the gizmos we fit, like lights on buzzers, tinkering with dash bulb colours, etc are not strictly necessary, just a bit of a GL type refinement to add a bit of luxury to the whole ownership thing when we've got a spare hour or two to kill in the garage
Kev's a great guy. Most of us are... But we do like to banter some. Personally I like your light delay idea. Would be nice getting in at night and being able to see to put the key in without reaching up twice to turn light on/off
Spent saturday afternoon installing such a feature. Got a relay and socket from "Vehicle wireing products". Did it so both cab doors operate the lamp above the driver (a dublicate one will be fitted above the passenger very soon as its stupid VW didn't bother! Then again they didn't even bother wireing up the passengers door switch eather) but the lamp only stays on for the 10sec delay after the drivers door has been closed - I thought this best as if I pick someone up at night I can impatiently drive off instantly without excess light in my eyes. As I'll be driving it I won't care about any instant gloom the passneger might have, there'll be a switch if they want to change that.
Also got an LED festoon bulb in the slider intereour lamp, works perfect, light is vertully identical to the 11w filiment lamp it replaced so still looks original but only draws 1w - no more worries about leaving the door open. Going to do the same to the others soon! My delay relay doesn't fade out but it probubly wouldn't with LED's anyway so I'm happy.
our south african t3 syncro caravelle came with factory delay on the interior lights and heres the cool thing,if you leave the door open for 10 minutes itll turn the inside lights off,cj.
cheers for the info, Glen, and CJ,
does seem odd there's no light on the passenger side, or working plunger switch, mine has the plunger, but it does nowt, always just assumed it was faulty

I tried to work out how to do the 10min delay thing but couldn't find a suitable timer relay. A friend has one on his (soon to be scrapped ) Fiat Merina but I'm not sure I'd stoop to steeling electrical stuff off a 10 year old fiat, they are worse than Lucas! When drawing less than 0.1A with the LEDs though I think I could leave the door open for a few days and still have enough left to start the engine so I think I'll get over lacking that "feature".
according to vw user manual, mine supposedly has a delay on one of the rear area swivelly lights and the rear step light, which has never worked, found the huge relay/timer which is warm all the time (resistor??) while the interior is all pulled out for a bit of waxoyling im hoping to fix this.
