New engine.... VEGE??

Post by chippieshaun »

Hello all.
So , I made a sudden decision! (I usually tend to work this way)
The engine in my new van (1987 1.9 petrol) sounds not so great and leaking oil .......done 110k. Thought there is no point in throwing good money after bad and be better to start off with a new one.
So spoke to local vw specialist and he has advised a VEGE engine that he can supply and fit. He says that they are the best re-conditioned (re-manufactured , according to the web site!) engines that you can get!
This garage is the only one that i have found in S.E london that seems interested.
Can anyone advise if these engines really are what the garage reckons they are cracked up to be?? Or are there better options?
Any advice would be appreciated very muchly!
Cheers.

blimey , that sounds like a much better deal!
The VEGE (fitted) was gonna be more like double that figure and the warranty would be 12 months or 12k , as oposed to 24 months or 24k!!
Very interesting......i will check them out tomorrow. Not sure how they can do it so cheap though. They fitted an engine for you? and you had no probs with it?
Great , thanks for the imfo. :o

mmm..... sounds very good.
Are VEGE supposed to be the rolls royce then?
The quote I got was £1100 for engine and £375 for fitting plus VAT!!!
Huge difference , even if it means a small treck to Essex.
These guys must be good or they wouldnt offer such a good warrantee.

OH......i was told that it was a re - manufactured engine , which i took as being reconditioned. Will read up a bit and decide if the massive extra cost is worth it in the long run. This camper i bought it is here to stay so maybe a VEGE is the way forward.

vege vs elite

Post by bartlby bus »

ok heres my story i had a vege engine fitted that drove for approximately 4000 miles then it sheared a cylinder head bolt but because it was off the road having a gearbox rebuilt for about 3 months before it happened just outside the year warranty even though the milage was low they wouldn't do any warranty work for it. that cost me about £1500 for the engine and to have it fitted i was the quoted £1200 by the mechanic to fix this but there would be no warranty i decided to look elsewhere as money was tight.

Then I had a reconed elite vw engine a 1.9 water cooled fitted (which has been great by the way) for their good price. they were very helpful and fixed some other niggly things when they put the engine in they also put it through an mot as well, of course they charged extra for these things. They also came to Bristol to pick up the van extra cost again but all in all it was still cheaper than the previous quote and the engine has a one year warranty ( if they service it i think they will warranty for two years).

The van runs sweet as a nut and i whole heartedly recommend their service.

vege customer service not so good in my opinion.

Elite have featured on this forum in both and not so good posts... however, the general concensus always seems to be that they will honour their warranty and even go the extra mile if things go wrong. And of course they are always learning by any mistakes or problems in the past - well hopefully. They do a lot of travelling to collect and deliver, whereas many others leave you stranded...Maybe talk to them first and agree a 'deal price'.. on what you want and how you expect them to respond if there are problems..

VEGE aren probably the largest VW engine reconditioners in Europe, but that doesn't mean they are beyond reproach, they are a mass production company and you know what that can mean.... I have a recon VEGE head on my diesel, it had a few 'issues' (iffy threads and things) but overall was a very good casting, and has so far served well and been reliable...

when i was looking for a motor for my last van i settled on a vege motor, ran like a dream, and still going strong with its new owner, after recently rebuildind a 2.1 myself i cant see how elite can do what they say they do to these engines as the cost of the parts alone (excluding labour and machining) is more than they charge for the motor. do the maths it dont add up......................
