gas conversion questions

Post by tony-de-whitt »

Hello all.

Ive just emigrated to Australia and of course bought another type 25, 1983 fuel injected.
If i could kindly pick your brains it would be apreciated.
Firstly ive been told by a number of gas installers over here that they are not interested in converting a kombi the main reason given is that there is not a kit available for this vehicle, does anyone know if this is true?.
Secondly it is fuel injected would this make it more difficult to convert or impossible to convert?
And finally i was told that running these engines on gas would cause engine damage.

THanks in advance for all the replies.
cheers
anthony

Not sure how easy it is to locate a carb in a country where most of the kombis are injected.then there is the cost of changing it and then the gas conversion. It might be easier and cheaper to carry on with fuel.
Thanks anyway

the only cost with changing to carb is the carb and manifold....... ebay!

its all swappable, unplugable and plumbable, you dont need to buy anythng other than the carb and inlet manifold for a DG engine
the lpg conversion s nothig special, its a basic car kit.

its possible, from what i understand the aussies have been into lpg longer than us, so i am suprised you cannot get all the stuff you need. everything i used was italian and supplied by a company called tinley tech. they have an e mail address info@tinleytech.co.uk give them a try. i know that they do seperate ecu,s for lpg as i have one for my van. i understand that you need to drill into the inlet manifold so you must remove this before fitting. got to be worth doing for the money saving, and i understand a much cleaner fuel.

There is a guy, Andy that moved back to Oz 2 or 3 years ago, he has a Syncro he took vack from UK.. he has LPG and I am sure he could help you, if you can find him....

but its BS, maybe your converter has no experience with the VW and cant be arsed, as for FI being a problem... BS also...

You could go carb, but check thats ok for any emissions etc rules...

I will see if I can find Andys details but its been a long time since we talked...

the mixer plate for the gas simply bolts between the airflow meter and the air filter box on an injection engine, wouldnt have thought the hassle of swapping over to carbs to be worth it, theLPG system on mine works great with injection.
