Personally, I'd make it dependent on the overall condition of the van.

Tarting up a semi-wreck with a brandnew VC might be a bit OTT

On the other hand ...the difference between new and reconditioned isn't that great.

Here http://www.busschmiede.de/html/visko.htm a new one iss 778 Euro, a recon 449 plus 250 deposit for sending back the old one ...and if your old one is really badly damaged you might not see your deposit back.

Everybody else will tell you to go for selectable 4WD anyway

May have an alternative option to the usual recon VC etc... am speaking with the guy in a couple of weeks...

Mine is too tight, which is great on slippery stuff.. but not good on the road..

Syncronauts did a group purchase direct from the OEM in Austria a couple of years back.

No reason why we cant do the same again if its wanted.

Thanks all. we are off to Morocco at the end of febuary so need to make a decision soon, may use Dorfbrunnen-garage people[387euros+ a possible 150 euros for new plates] or go without changing it? i need to replace the cv joints[front] though.
ta.
i am interested in a group buy/anyother alternatives.

Not a good idea to put new cv's on a buggered vc.

Out of interest how much cheaper do these group/direct buys get?

Karlt, its failed in the open/no drive way[ if i jack up a front wheel and revolve it there is next no resistance!]. the front cv's are very loose[ up and down/front to back movement].

Oh. If no drive then no need to change cv's until vc is driving. Just a thought.

Dont know that they were necessarily any great saving from Austria ; but at the time we did them there wer not many sources and this was an alternative to Dorfbrunnen/CAV's reconditioned or new from Derek Drew in the US; a lot of traders have joined the market since then.

I will see what i can find out.

think the last one I got early 07 from Syncronutz was in the high 300's, remember the sting as I counted out the cash..

New VC's from the supplier we used before are at 575 euros plus 20% Vat and transport costs which will come out at about 715 euros = £550 approx (subject to money transfer fees and euro conversion rate), no exchange VC required so you can put your old one on the shelf or use it as a door stop.

Think they came from SDP Graz, or their original suppliers...

Andy,
Originally refurbed VC's, the first we got from Dorfbrunnen were about £400, and haven't dropped much below that since. £500 ~@ £550 was laways typical for 'cheap' brand new ones from non-VW sources
