Of starter motors and things

Post by Andyvandy »

Anyone like a little story?

Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin.
And you thought you had a stressful day?

Well as Network Manager, managing a network of around 126 computers and peripherals who wants a total campus wide email failure?
Add to that a certain T25 1.9 TD starter motor that decided to take a little holiday without asking me!
One moment it was fine next no starter - help!

Determined it was said starter motor by connecting my digital multimeter up to the solenoid electrical feed and dangling the meter over the back seat so I could see it when I turned the key 12+ Volts no problem.

I rang the local VW dealers parts dept who kindly informed me that for £225 and a couple of days wait I could have a new one. (the £25 being a surcharge because the starter was a re-manufactured unit in Germany and had no original VW part number on it so it didn't count for exchange purposes!!) aagh.

But, the parts man turned out to be a very nice man indeed when he referred me to a local auto electrician (the only one between Aberdeen and Inverness)

Although he had work into the new year he offered to take a look at it for me. A kind friend gave me a lift into Elgin (I even suffered going round Tesco with her whilst I waited for the motor to be fixed)
The upshot being that I had it fixed and back in my grubby little mitts the same day for just £47!

So its up early in the morning to put it back in.
And what better place for my camper to breakdown but on my own drive!
Fixed the email problem as well!

So there is God after all!

Andy

Aye aye Andy, nice to hear of another van up here in the North East of Scotland. If we are not carefully we may have enough for a convoy

Sounds like you scored with your starter motor guy.

I went to start my van this morning and failed. The battery may have given the up the ghost. But I fear its the starter. Not so sure how to tell the difference. How can I tell?

Just done what I should have and checked wiki.....thanks

Not sure if it is the starter or not. I am a bit of a newbie with these things. I ran out of time to get to the bottom of the problem, will have sometime tomorrow. To have a proper go at it.

The wiki is a great source of info. Just need to re-write it in my own words to understand it.

Where did you get yours fixed? I live just off the A96........ are you in Elgin?

Hi,

Well the message must have disappeared into the Ether :!: :?

How did you get on?

Do you need the contact details for the auto electrician guy in Elgin?

I am in Findhorn ten miles west of Elgin.

Got it going at long last.

Jumped started from my car in the end. Drove to Pitcaple and back 35 mins, seems fine now.

Will keep you posted.
