lpg tank position question

lpg tank position question

I am looking into the lpg route on my '88 dg hightop, what are the choices of tank locations? could it be put in the left hand side engine bay with a fireproof (eg alloy plate) seal to seperate it from the main bay? or is that a potential fire hazard/not enough room/ buggers up airflow to the engine bay? just thinking out loud really. Basicly i am looking for a solution that doesnt involve a hooving great tank in a wardrobe at the back or under the back seat type thing!

The alternatives are rather more expensive and do not hold as much gas.

I have an Autosleeper high top and found the instalation of a 72 litre tank has reduced the usable under bed storage by 3 foot.

hardly missed

I too looked at the alternatives and found the only one worth it were two under slung torpedoes between the chassis rails.
as there is a legal distance requirement for clearance with the road.

We went with the 55 litre (50 litres between fills) torroidal which fits very nicely in the Autosleeper Wardrobe (still leaving 30% useable space in the wardrobe).
We never used the wardrobe anyway as the Hightop has loads of storage anyway so don't miss it.

with gas at 43p a litre we now enjoy weekends away all year round, without worrying about huge fuel costs, that would spoil quality time with the family.

I certainly understand your concerns about storage loss. ...However the benefits far outweigh the small inconvenience.

Kev, thanks tis a bit rougher round the edges than the pics show - but it will impove over the next year...... :D . (There is an even better one here in Inverness on a "J" plate) and he lives just down the road.

We pay 52 p litre (againast 1.04 for petrol tho)!

Tank capacity is 54 litres* with a gentle foot and cruising at constant 60mph around 220 miles

* Actual tank capacity is 72litres but with gas it will only fill to 80% capacity

thanks Kev,, wonder if a 100ltr tank would fit in that space.. was that the biggest you could get in there?, oh and where do you fill it from? your tank looks like it disapears into a wardrobe are type place, does the tank continue to the side of the van and is filled via a hole in the side of the van? sorry for all the questions btw

Not a bother.
The tank is filled via a point at the rear of the van just behind the off side wheel arch,
Yes the tank continues under the storage bins to the ply boarding on the side
The width required for the tank is 300mm minimum.
I suspect that 72 Litre is the largest pressurised tank available, unless someone reading this knows different.. :wink:
