Erratic start/running 82 transporter

Post by andybeedub »

I have a 82 transporter with air cooled 2l engine, automatic box, automatic chokes and it has recently been reconditioned by a mate and me (he's a mechanic).
Its generally running very well, heaps better than pre recon but its erratic.
If it doesn't start on first turn over it generally won't for hours (flooding) and then it flattens battery.
Once it is running it is extremely rough for 5-10mins and if stalls in this period - well see above!
Once running and beyond the dangerous stall period it is mighty fine until a flat period say after 50miles or so when it becomes quite sluggish this will disappear and return wihtout any sort of frequency.
Over the recent past I have had wiring checked from bat to start motor (haven't stripped my starte motor like smiler tho) and had mechanics peer at it unconvinceingly.
Basically in my area (kendal S Lakes) there are no obvious air cooled mechanics and either someone tells me whats wrong or I'll drive it to an air cooled expert and let them tune it up.
So question is anyone got ideas whats wrong (and i'll do it) or does anyone know of a garage or mechanic within 50 miles who can do the job?
thanks

hi mate . if you think you can get it to barrow . I will have a look for you sounds like you could be having carb trouble, one thing thats definatly a good idea ,,, go to ek brakes and buy some dry fuel [ honest im not joking] its an adative that absorbs water in your petrol.
if that dont work after 50 or so miles get in touch with me :)

Posibly a sticking needle valve in the top of your carburettor float chamber.

dry fuel

Post by andybeedub »

Thanks colin
I have added the dry fuel and will see if it makes any difference
I can get the van to you, but from kendal its a bit of an effort so would like to know what you mean by 'I'll have a look at it' ! If you are able and willing to give it a 'tune-up' sorting out the carbs, auto choke and generally running (for a fee of course) then I can drop it over get the 555 bus back and return to collect when its ready!
Ideally what I need is an expert who can attend to its woes
i'll get back if its still troublesome
Cheers
andy
