Following an email from Wolfgang Nicklich from Germany further ordering of thge part number 251 407 328 from VW at a retail price of £7.09 plus vat got the correct V ring seal, sans the metal ring.
I had noticed that the price had droped from the previous £11 odd quid it was when I ordered one a couple of years ago and got the metal ring without the seal, so maybe there was a confusion that has been cleared up.
So if you have a metal ring and your rubber is worn or perished you can get new ones from VW now. If your metal ring has gone then you can use the alternative profile rubber V ring on its own.Seems to be ok after a couple of years on my van.
