Secound tank fuel gage?

Post by Other-Power »

Hi all,

Just getting around to fitting the second tank in my westy. I am after putting in a fuel gage in the second tank but am having trouble hunting one down.

I have installed a 20litre plastic jerry 'can' fuel tank as this is all i can fit without major modifications! The jerry can is upright and i am reluctant to put the fuel gage on the side of the jerry can.

I dont mind if it only reads the last 1/4 of the tank only.

Anybody any ideas?

I have thought of using a beetle fuel gage and re bending the float to work for the last 1/4 of the range of the jerry can.

I would like to know what if any sealant i would have to use between the possible fuel gage and the jerry can.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

Jon

I would think very carefully about petrol sloshing arond in a can that you have butchered!!!!
Why???

And if its mounted inside the vehicle, then you are having a "giraffe".. not safe and not legal.. if dweezel, then it'll stink the place up..

If you need a bigger fuel tank then look for the south african 85 L tank (bit of work to fit and not cheap) or the extra "side tanks" that are available these fit either side of the main chassis rails between the outer sill and chassis. or get one fab'd up..

Toomanytoys reading your reply has me to re think about where i can fit a second tank for biofuel.Prehaps you could confirm or an other member as to the legal requirement as to where fuel tanks can be fitted in a T25.I have seen a torroidal lpg tank fitted in the rear cupboard and a straight lpg tank under the rock&roll seat bed Aircooled&watercooled petrol. The lpg tanks fitted as discribed would have been inside the vehicle. My own T25 of which i am considering running on bio fuel or svo/wvo i was going to fit a good quality 30ltr plastic second fuel inside the vehicle. This would have been installed at the back of the van inside.I think i read some where that on fitting a fuel tank on the underside of a vehicle it has to have a certain hight from the road to tank.My question is this how come lpg tanks are fitted inside and petrol or diesel may not be.Between the chassis rails seems the best place and i may have to do this. Thanks for any replies

Thanks toomanytoys, i have thought about the 85 L tank, i have thought about a syncro tank as well, both of which would not fit with my vans curent lowered state.

where do you get the one that fits between the sill and the chassis?

Other-power you may have to have one made up.I picked up a 20ltr fuel tank at car boot last weekend. It fits just between the chassis rail & inner seal.I had intended to fit it inside the van at the rear. But will install it under the vehicle instead before i do this i will cut it in half and weld up extra plate to give me 40ltrs.Also i have in mind to run a fuel heater in the tank proberly a coil fitted inside the tank to the vehicles coolent system. How about a modified steel jerry can if you can get some one to weld up extra or to fit?

Legally IIRC you cannot carry more than 5L of petrol....in a vehicle (in a can of course!!) actually IIRC you cannot have more than 5 or 10L at home either!!!

If Vegoil etc... dunno.. Derv etc is inherantly safer of course... but you have to consider the safety asspect of a 30 or 40 L tank sitting in a spot and must be secured very well..

On a 2wd a syncro tank might fit.. doesnt matter if its lowered or not.. but I think the gearbox might foul on it (forgot this!!!) as the box and engine in a syncro sits lower... although you could get a tank made to fit in thea space, just not as big as the syncro one...
"saddle" tanks... Mmmm I shall have to look, cant remember where I saw them last.. know they were available from SA and sure there was something in the UK.. will look...

I am thinking more about this second tank installation.I am going to install it between the inner chassis rail & outer seal. The safety aspect of having a tank fuel of 40 ltrs fuel vegi or other inside the van dont appeal to me.I would rather spend more time getting a safer installation.I looked on ebay and there are a few sellers who can make up tanks. In my case i will refabricate a fuel tank .

Hey

The vans a 1981 1.6 na diesel Westy.

I want the second tank for SVO.

I have found a way to have a tank inside one of the cupboards and still be able to fill it outside without having to hack another hole into the side of the van.

I am not sure why it is such a no no for me to have fuel inside the van even when it is secure and pressure regulated / vented to the outside. I appriciate the van will possibly end up smelling of SVO if i ever have a leak.

I am reading that SVO has a flash point around 200 deg C.

LPG is allowed to be kept in a van for the fridge and cookers etc?

I know gas fuels are safer then liquid fuels as they can only combust at point of exit and must be vented to the outside but surly a fuel that flashes around 200 deg C is safe inside a van?

I also have a question to anybody who knows such things, the use of a fuel selector valve when selected to the second tank will cause the fuel pump for the diesel to be pumping against a dead end, will this brake the pump?

Also i am sure i will need a second fuel pump for my second tank as it is lower then the injection pump. Can i use a standard fuel pump like the ones bug pack make?

Thanks for the help as its shedding a lot of light.
