quick AAZ update

Post by ELVIS »

finished and done 400+ miles . still not done cam or pump timing so still more to come/better tuning to be had ,but................
FCUKING WOW!! only mods are a JX boost pin set at max ramp angle . accelerates twice as well as the JX , hard to keep it below 60 on motorway as it wants to do more , accelerates really hard from 60-80 and still has more .on all my 'usual routes' i can leave it in a higher gear much longer and sometimes not even change down. between swansea and exeter it never came out of 5th , not even on any of the hills (unlike the 1.6) was pulling hills in 5th ans still accelerating!!!!!
drove it like a complete knob , took mates on for joyrides/mates have joyriden it , hammered it down motorway and .................................................

32mpg !!!! currently on second tank of diesel and driving like ms daisy , not showing half tank yet and got past 200miles! :D [/b]

Nice one dude!

I'm not sure what's going on with mine but my AAZ doesn't perform much better than my old 1.9DG
Fuel consumption has dropped a bit now - mid 30's
max speed is about 75 and slow getting there.
Have made no mods apart from oil cooler and am quite frankly looking at changing it out for a Subaru.
The wife now does regular trips from Winchester to Bude,Cornwall and is getting peed off with it taking her 5 hours to get there!

She wants a faster bus! but obviously if wer can coax more power from the AAZ its the way to go.

ANy ideas?

change boost pin for 1.6td one! really really woke my engine up ! as i understand it (v-lux explained it in tiny words  ) on an AAZ you get a constant suppy of fuel under boost , with a 1.6td pin you get more fuel as the boost increases. dosnt appeared to have affected the mpg either - with the 1.6 i got 30mpg if i hammered it , try this

http://www.vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=579

pin is set so max ramp angle faces the rear bumper , if you get one i will send ya a pic by pic how to - but if you swapped ya engine over you can do this easy  havnt even touched the max fuelling screw yet either.
i am running AAZ inlet\exhaust manifolds , dunno how much that affects/improves performance. :D

Cheers elvis you're a dude.
My pump has a sealed top with no central nut like on the first pic in the link you sent.
Would a 1.6 pin fit do you think?

Have you heard of these Giles pumps?
Apparently there's a guy oop north who reworks pumps rebuilding them for performance.

sorry , not a diesel mechanic - just an avid 'back street scratcher'
kind of bizarre that i am sooooo happy with mine , and your not! i know your not a mong , just thinking out loud (1) air filter (2) cam timing/cam belt set properly (3) previous owner not fiddled with max fuel screw (4) previous owner not chuffed up pump timing (5) pressure signal pipe from manifold to lda not split/cracked/loose etc.
it is so easy , undo the 4 screws that hold the cover on (dont worry about what type of cover you have ) you will see the black diaphragm that has a small nut on top. grab hold of nut and pull the whole assembly up . you will have the boost pin with the diaphragm attached to it . undo small nut , swap for new boost pin , enjoy and smile .
i cannot see any difference between mine and yours other than pin :?:

How do you know I'm not a Mong?

ok here goes..
1) free flow cone air filter ok
2) Set up cam timing with the help of HarryMann (unless it's jumped...)
3) Max fuel screw not moved as far as I can see
4) Pump timing set up by HarryMann and myself using correct dial gauge

could be 5) haven't checked yet.

Cheers dude...know where I can get a 1.6 lda pin from?

Lol

sold me only 'spare' one to v-lux . going to scrappy today so will take my screw driver and see what i can find- apparently some other models have common pins !
what size filter have you got ? is it one of the little gay ones from GSF that fits ontop of standard beetle carbs ? ive got a shagging big un behind my rear light cluster.
you could take a dremel to your pin so instead of having a flat face it has an angled ramp - search on the site i put a link up for.
will PM ya tonight if i find owt out!! :D

Filters a big fat mo fo behind the left hand rear light cluster too!

I'll have a look at that site but would also be interested in a price for what you can find...

Cheers mate.
