rusty seams

Post by David Last »

Hi folks, I have a '90 T25 Komet Hi Top with signs of rust in several seams. I have rubbed down, sealed and resprayed the affected area but after a year it is showing up again. Can anyone suggest a good VW van specialist in the South, Southwest or South Midlands where I could take it to discuss what is required? I am not looking for a cheap job. I live in Cornwall.
Thanks
Dave

you can sand blast the seams and use "vactan" or similar to brush into the seam(read label), before tidying and painting. if you take it to a vw dealer they will look at you all funny with glazed eyes :? . is it still under warranty sir? is it a 2007 model sir? what company account is it on sir?

rusty seams

 You cannot stop rust coming back, you can only slow it down. If you replace every panel you will still get rust returning!!! This is what I was told by one of the best body repair technicians in York! I tend to believe him! (The alternative is fibre glass panels!).

Try Curerust from Halfords it comes in a white plastic bottle if you sand the affected area then give it two coats of curerust it neutralises the iron oxide present in the steel its a type of acid that reacts with iron oxide effectively turning it back to steel it dries black and can be primed and painted
Never say you know when someones showing you because you will never be showed anything else if you do

Corrosion inhibitors use a chemical process ....

steel, may be somewhat protected by promoting oxidation ("rust") and then converting the oxidation to a metalophosphate by using phosphoric acid
this process is called Passivation.. forms an oxide or nitride that is only a few atoms thick.

Hydrazine and ascorbic acid are used as oxygen scavenger corrosion inhibitors. (little satches of compound in a tea bag thing)

ps..coca cola has lots of phosphoric acid in it

VACTAN stops rust dead!

Post by VWlewis »

Vactan works :D - lots of people have proven this as well as me! Highly recommended but always try to remove the rust first with all the above suggestions!

Hi,
I also have rusty seams,i've bought vactan to treat them with as well.
I think a lot of the problem maybe coming from the inside rather than from the repainted surfaces.
I've looked on the underside and found the sealant/underseal underneath has cracked and is allowing water etc to travel through the seam.

I only had my van resprayed a year and a half ago and already a couple of seems are starting to show a bit of rust, its always a problem we are going to have with T25,s with all the panel joins that they have.
Taking mine back to the spray shop to get the rust removed and sprayed over soon.
