Guessing being an 81 its an Aircooled. Mines a 2000cc 82 Aircooled with pop top. Generally get around 24 to the gallon out of it, though that can drop drastically if used in town a lot, or for short journeys.
Speed is hard to be exact as I know that the speedos over read a lot (borrowed my girl friends Road Angel the other day which work of GPS). Mine seems to do around 75-80 on the dial I think, which is more like 65-70 in reality. Think the origional manual for panel vans says it should do about 79, but campers weigh more and I'm sure a few horses will have escaped over the years.
Tend to reckon a good balance of speed for economy is around 65-70 on the dial in the Aircooled.

Thanks! must have some probs somewhere then!!
I have never "brimmed" the tank because of the fear of the top being rotten and the liquid gold flowing down the drain..(is that common) ???
The top speed on mine is prob 60 ish... but cruise ok at 50 i think. The only thing i can think is it is always fully laden with loads of stuff and enough food for 3 months!!

Definately sounds like you have some sort of problem. My '82 2.0 will happily cruise at 70, in fact I was most of the way to work this morning.
When fully loaded on holiday last year with bikes etc on the back it would still happily get past 75. The furthest I pushed it downhill was 85 in preparation for a real long uphill struggle I could see in the distance.
Check for airleaks in all of your vacuum lines, check your ignition timing.
Maybe your carbs are worn (very common) spray some carb cleaner around the outside of the carbs with the engine ticking over, especially around the area where the throttle spindle passes through the body. If the engine starts to run rough it signifies an air leak as it will have sucked in some of the carb cleaner.
As for economy, I reckon I only get about 20mpg on average.

We used to always get 15-18 out of our 2l Aircooled with pop top - maybe slightly better on a long run (downhill with a good wind) - engine wasn't the best though and mileage was a consistent 15 just before it died.......didn't die until waaay after we'd made our money back on the LPG conversion though - same mileage as petrol, half the price.
