Confused on Pipes!! HELP!!!

My hubby and his mate are fitting the engine into my T25, they ave had to swap a lot of parts as mine is an auto and the engine was out of a manual!!
They are stuck on 3 pipes that come to the back from the front on the drivers side, we think 1 is an air pipe

anyone got any ideas or sdrawings they could post please. It's a 1.9 engine.

Hi Nicky,I am no techy....but you should have water pipes front to rear...metal or plastic. The best thing you can do is to take a picture / pictures and stick them on a photo hosting site.

I have a 1.9 outside, so if you get really stuck we will do a "i'll stand by mine, and you stand by yours mobile phone jobby!

Any help would be appreciated, we didn't take the engine out, so not sure what bits we are missing or have got wrong!!

Hiya, Thanks for that, got my hubby to have a look and he is going to have another go at mine in the light tomorrow and compare engines! I will let you know how we get on! Thanks again x

First off.. the one on the left hand head... you have it on the end of the metal cross over pipe... the expansion tank should be connected there...

looks like the hoses from the expansion tank are connected incorrectly too..

the ones on the right of the engine bay... there should be some hoses that go ove the gearbox bellhousing and connect to the larger pipes.. the smaller one (should actually be 2

) are the heater supply and return that go onto one end of the metal crossover pipe and the hose connection on the right head (same connection as the left head where you havent got the hose connected)

Dare i suggest... that whoever took the engine out should have taken a little more care and labeled the connections...!!!

Or here is a thought... buy a haynes manual and have a look in it!!!

Having taken a second look at the engine... there are "bodged" hoses hanging over the back of the carb... (they dont look "factory") and I reckon you should look at what you took out...maybe the pipes you need are still on the old engine??

Failing that, I think to do it right you need to see a comparable van and get the correct parts, several breakers on here will have them...
Other wise you will have a crappy system that will kill the engine (again??)

Third look..... Whats that coolant hose (19mm ish) doing running round on the right hand side of the engine??? thats not right... no hoses that side.... they all come and go from the left (apart from the 19mm heater hoses)...

Must be a member near to help out... maybe Clive?

I think I can see what some of the problem is... some of the parts are from an early cooling system and a late cooling system... and they are incorrectly installed... the confusion has come from the fact that its had an engine swap at some time and they didnt have a clue I am afraid....

Have a look on vagcat, there is a log on= c8090, password= c8090

look up type 2, 1983, engine, waterpipes, 1.9, you will see an early system.

do the same for a 1988 1.9 and see a late system...

Your probably right about the 2 ages, it came with 1 knackered engine which was partly stripped (all water pipes off) and the engine we've put in, we did have to swap the water pump, the metal crossover pipe and a few other bits.
I'll get a couple more close up pics in a mo!!

Th "alloy" block with 2 pipes on is a heater/pump for pre heating.. not original equipment.. Disregard it and the hose for the mo...

the engine you have bought is a 1.9 DF (60bhp) rather than the DG (78bhp) that was in there...

The 3 pipes underneath.. the 2 smaller ones are the cabin heater supply and return the larger one is one of the main radiator hoses, there should be another!!!!!!

You really need someone local that know about these... I dont think you are going to be able to sort it yourselves...
If I was closer I would pop over... I may be in the UK in a couple of weeks, but poss not for very long.. if I know I will be there for a week I shall make contact.. come and have a look and label up what you need to do..

Oh... it will be pointless taking it to any garage/mechanic, unless ther REALLY KNOW these vehicles... the cooling system isnt simple and very few mechs will understand whats going on in there...

Ah rite will leave the heating thing off,thanks for the offer of help, i have a mate who owns a vw garage and he is going to see if he has time to pop over and have a look, I have been out and bought a haynes manual so fingers crossed, will keep you updated!!

afaik the df has a solex carb without hoses to the cooling system to it, so pics look like a dg to me, I don't think there is any other way to tell apart from looking at the code on the block or whipping the heads off. apart from the carb the plumbing on df and dg is the same (I've replaced a DF with a DG).
