Out of interest..

Just how important is it that the bell housing is watertight?

Mine has a little hole on the bottom, about 10mm in diameter, should this have a plug in it. Its never had anything in there since i got the van :?

hmm, best get myself something to plug that hole with then.

Always assumed that hole was a drain of some kind...... i guess not

Not had any trouble with the clutch, but i guess it would've been just a matter of time.

Is there a proper vw part to bung the hole?

And why is the hole there in the first place? is it something to do with the casting process?

Well, not park as such. Although it does happen unintentionally every now and then....

But muddy, filthy, claggy, sloppy gloop is fairly common stomping ground.

Reason i asked was, why is the bell housing sealant so important? Surely you need to be parking in deep water for that to be necessary too huh?

refered to as 'wading plugs' in offroad circles if that helps ya search . dont forget ya gearbox /diff caings - make sure any breather holes have mini snorkels put on em ( boggo standard fishtanl line will do) as the casings go into water they will coole very quickly and draw water in !

The syncro diff and transaxle has snorkel breathers as strandard. The syncro clutch/bellhousing has large breathers oop top, but that hole can be plugged I reckon, though a removable one might be best, see what Russel says about that too, he'll know...

I think you misjudge us sir!

Not the first time and doubt if it'll be the last

..and those breathers can easily be extended as high as you like, not that breather or shnorkel height is a competitive matter, 99% of them seem just for show, or yet another way to spend money IMHO
