More AAZ questions...sorry - Breather system/oil catch tank
So im in the process of building up an AAZ to go in my syncro and i want to nip this running on oil thing in the bud before i get any problems, but im finding the whole oil breathing system a bit hard to get my head around.
The AAZ has a breather that comes from the block up to the oil separator on top of the rocker cover which isnt there on the JX - should this be blanked off using the JX blanking plate or should i integrate this breather?
Im thinking i might install an oil catch tank straight away, rather than waiting to see if i have any trouble.

Where would be the best place in the system for this to be situated?
If i'm understanding it right, the breather system feeds oxygenless, oil ridden air back into the intake to 'recycle'.
So rather than just venting to atmosphere, the catch tank means you are venting, but the oil gets 'caught' and only gases escape...? is this right?
Or does the catch tank get installed in-line into the original set up, so you are removing the oil from the air before it gets recycled?
With the tank having two hose attachments i'm guessing that one is an inlet and one an out? meaning the tank could be attached inline after the oil separator?
Or have i got the wrong end of the stick?

i have kept the second breather next to the oil filter in place, my teory (whether right or wrong
) is that vw put it there for a reason , im guessing it lowers crankcase pressure therefore looking after your seals/rings -especially once you got some miles on the engine.
have looked into loas for when i started mine - some catch tanks vent fumes by way of a small air filter on the 'oulet' side , some put it back into the air inlet tract. being a pikey ive kept the AAZ mushroom on rocker cover that the crankcase breather vents to , plumped a length of 13mm oil hose (apparently water hose can start breaking up after a while if you use it) to mushroom and connected a £5 boy racer mini filter to it , as long as filter is lower/lowest oil wont cool and sit in hose. mini filter is near bumper/rear light . was thinking of getting a large size rattle can lid , drilling hole big enough for hose to pass thr , and putting it as a shield around filter to stop fumes getting onto bodywork etc etc

Thanks Andy, thats what i needed to hear

The JX motor DOES have a vent mushroom/breather on top of the cam-box cover, it`s the NON-turbo motors that don`t.
Yeah, they both have a mushroom, but the AAZ has an extra breather pipe that runs from next to the oil filter up to the mushroom on the rocker cover.

to save spunking a wedge on a catch tank , i took off the hose from the mushroom that goes to inlet tract and cut a 2" piece off! scrubbed it for ages/put in a jamjar of 'gunk' and shook for ages . got it spotless and degreased! i then slid a piece of 13mm ID hose 'inside' after applying loadsa heatproof/silicon/instant gasket/stuff - wiped off excess/smoothed for tidy finish, on other end put on a straight plastic hose connector to join the hose to the boy racer mini filter.filter will be lowest part so oil dosnt collect in hose . cable tie to engine support bar behind bumper.

unfortunately i am not a tree hugger
gonna mount it so filter is upside down and gonna put a rubber bung/blanking washer in it. maybe not ideal but cheap n chearful and dosnt put oil back into engine.
more i read and think about it , more im thinking a (not quite as)cheap and chearful catch tank off fleabay - bout £30 should see one
