Plumes of black smoke

Post by Bilbo Blue »

She's a smokin a good un.
This has only just started and I need advice on what to do.
Black smoke appears when I accelerate from standstill especially on the gear change, much much more than normal when accelerating hard. Also it chucks it out when the turbo 'kicks in'.
I'm assuming its too much fuel as the smoke is not blue or white.
Its a vee gee remanufactured lump with new injectors and pump.
The unit has done only about 1500 miles.
I serviced it about 600 miles ago ie new air filter and fuel filter.
Any ideas?

One good thing is, the fact that other motorists back off my tail, when they see the smoke comin their way!!!!!

With 1500 miles on it, I`d be back onto Vege asap, and asking them what the problem could be, rather than possibly invalidating any warranty.
Keep it real.

Checked it out myself today and the problem is with the cold start cable.
For some reason the lever on the pump is not returning to the 'off' position.
Have disconected the cable and the lever springs back ok so i'm gonna fit a new cable.

IIRC the cold start lever only affects the timing below something like 1500rpm, so shouldnt really affect the running of the engine once your on the go.... :?:

Well once I replaced the cable it cured it so it must be that. Where the cable went through the bracket near the pump and the outer sleeve is held in place with a circlip thingy. The outer sleeve had broken there and was pulling away from the body when relesed and not allowing the inner cable to go back to the off position.

Black smoke = Lack of air
White smoke = Unburt fuel
Blue smoke = burning oil

Hope this makes sence!

White smoke is cool combustion temps also.
Black is unburnt fuel, or just too much, more than there is air to burn with it..

Always have used it when the engine's cold.
With it, she fires up in a nanno second of turning the key.
Without it she has to turn over for aprox 5 secs.
Yes the glow plugs are working fine, if I don't wait for the light to go out then she takes an eternity to fire up.
Also engine runs a tad rough (and I only mean the odd misfire) for 1 min on tickover if its not used. If I just jump in and drive straight away shes fine.
Funnyly enough it was exactly the same with the last lump that was in.

I'm not doing any damage am I?

That all sounds a bit confusing! Cool? Not fired perhaps?. Black is unburt fuel? perhaps its lacking oxegen/Air to accelerate combustion (no air no fire) Keep it simple man!

Fuel also acts as a coolant to combustion chambers. :)
