viking roof struts

Post by craigie »

I bought replacement gas struts for our viking roof, and noticed the existing centre strut isn't fixed to anything on the roof floor. It slides along inside a kind of runner, and looks like it should be attached to something, possibly with a spring along the length of the runner. I cant see how the strut would help with raising the roof if the bottom part can just slide back and forth?

Anyone got any ideas/pics of a working mechanism?

thanks

It would be really useful if someone could post a pic of what the centre strut sits in/ is attached to. I've a feeling it was because it wasn't carrying any of the load properly that I bust a couple of the roof hinges. Anyone help a fellow viking brother out?

Hi mate..
when i chopped my viking i seem to remember
something like that happening.... but cant remember
enough to let ya know. all i DO remember is the amount of flex in the roof metal around that area.. i had to strengthen it up with a plate..
(no rot there, just weak construction under the weight of the roof)

Thanks Wendy, cant quite make out if the bottom end of the strut is fixed or slides along. Like I said, if it just slides along it doesnt take any of the load. Seems a bit odd. The mystery continues. Any viking owners in the edinburgh area, so I could get a proper look?

cheers

it does just slide and we cant see where it takes any load. we are thinking it might just assist with pushing the roof up initially

It doesn't support anything. It just ensures the canvas folds properly when you lower the roof (I think). I came to that conclusion when I borrowed my Dad's back in the 80's......so I could well be talkin' out me ar$e
