High CO2 emissons for MOT 2 litre Aircooled

Post by nesty »

Hi

I thought I'd put this down as a separate thread to my other one. My camper got a fail on Co2 reading. It said reading 6.0% wheres the pass mark is 4.5%. It passed on smoke test and the other reading HC.

What is the best way to address this. The engine is reconditioned about 3 years ago. Take it first thing to change plugs and air filter then get carbs pro tuned? It's a standard 2.0

Thanks

Nesty

Just for mot, take air filter out. Usually allows the engine to breathe a little easier as there is no restriction on airflow through the filter. I know there shouldnt be much restriction anyway but every little helps here and it's not too far over the pass limit.
Add a fuel additive into fuel tank. This will help. Look for one that says it reduces Co2 emissions and remember to take van for a run to allow enough fuel through the filter, fuel lines and float chamber to get the new stuff from the tank through.
Use a good quality petrol in tank for mot also. Go for a premium pump not just the 'normal' stuff!
Oh yes... Go back to normal after mot!!

co2? you mean co!

dont think you will reduce the co content by 2% by removing the air filter and running it on good fuel.
try screwing the little screw in half a turn at the base of the carbs.
but it would be gess work best thing is to get it done properly.
at the end of the the day it will save you petrol .

Make sure van is fully warmed up before test. Take it for a very long, brisk run and turn off immediately you get to garage, or preferably get straight to emissions testing stage. Hope this helps. I assume you have got van serviced regularly and no probs last test.

CO or CO2, completely different gasses.
CO2 should be about 13-14%
CO on that engine if in sensible order should be about 2% but lower figures are achieveable if the engine has been looked after properly, which judging by your post it hasn't.

Hi

I mean the CO. I think the carbs haven't been adjusted for some time. I have new spark plugs and air filter to fit.

I argee about the not being looked after by prevouis owner. I am going to have it tuned on Monday, so hopefully that should resolve the issue.

The HC reading was fine.
