fitting a westi poptop is it possible on transporter??

Post by rubyvan »

Can anyone tell me if you can fit a westi poptop to an 1988 tin top transporter van (the one with the front bench seat, round headlights, non walk thru), or were they made for specific models. If so what roofs can be fitted to this model of transporter any help much apprciated.
Thanks
steve

Westy roof can be made to fit, but it will never fit properly, the original `van supplied to Westfalia for conversion has a flat tin roof pressing so the top bed sits flat, the tin-top van has a curved roof, so it doesn`t fit properly.

People on here have done it, but you need to cobble up some sort of framework to make a flat deck once the roof is fitted, not easy and not straight-forward. The other option was the late Westy camper, called the Mosaik Joker, which DID have the Westy roof, on the tin-top van, with a factory made framework etc to make a flat bunk, these are rare vehicles, so not much chance of getting the bits to convert yours.

Your other options are either get a new Reimo pop-top fitted, they still do `em, will be around £2000 fitted, or look for parts from one of the UK conversions, like Devon etc, that converted panel-van tin-tops, so their roofs will fit as long as you get all the parts to do it. It is NOT a straight-forward job.

Have a search, it`s been mentioned loadsa times in posts.
Keep it real.
