Automatic gearbox repair/replacement?

Post by Shipdrives »

My other bus is a 1980 2.0l air-cooled automatic and the gearbox is on its last legs. :( Is there anywhere I can get a replacement reconditioned one (with or without exchange) or is the only option to have my existing one overhauled? The bus is in Spain but I can get the gearbox back to the UK. In Spain I've been given estimates of 1000-2500 Euros depending on what's wrong and this seems a bit steep. Any help appreciated.

You might want to look at TheSamba.com and see if you can pick up a good condition or reconditioned one from the US where they are much more common.

e.g. (this is probably not right for your 1980 van but give these guys a call)

Thanks for the website address however in the meantime, a local chap in Spain's had a look at my auto gearbox & some sort of pump inside was seized & hadn't been working for some time so he took it to bits & freed it up. Hopefully the gearbox'll now work OK once it's refitted - fingers crossed! :ok
