TD tail pipe, facing down or outwards?

Post by lambro28 »

When James came to look at my stricken camper recently he said ah tail pipe is wrong, its facing down!
I tried to fit it outwards when it was new, James tried again for me, but it still only wants to be fitted with the outlet facing downwards, is this right or have I got the wrong pipe? Van originally was a straight deisel, it was then converted to 1.6TD.

Neither really :D

It goes up like a reverse U-bend and then down, but the opening faces pretty much backward as it sits at an angle

Some of them face down, some face out.
I dunno if this is a concerted effort by a certain exhaust brand to try to meet the new car criterior of a Diesel tailpipe to face the ground as this reduces Diesel particulates in the atmosphere.

As for the U bend, thats the TD syncro tailpipe, it comes out of the box, goes up then comes back down, a measure i presume to stop water going back up the tailpipe when wading, also, with the syncro engine being 2" or so lower it keeps the tailpipe up out of the way.

So, both are right but I couldn't tell you if it was the tailpipe flange thats welded on differently or if it is the exhaust box flange thats welded in a different place.

From the factory, they face out.
