Newbie seeks help on 1.6td!
I've just purchased an '86 Westie Joker with a 1.6td lump. I'm having some problems getting the joint between the exhaust manifold and turbo to seal and as a result it lacks power somewhat! (slow doesn't describe it!). Does anyone know whether there is meant to be a metal gasket here or is it a face to face joint?? Also, are the bolts stretch bolts?
Any ideas/help much appreciated!!

Thanks, I thought as much, guess I'll have to take the turbo off and do the same to the two faces.
I took the bolts out last night and they don't look in particularly good condition, I may have to bite the bullet and replace them.
Also found a fuel leak from the injector pump, not quite sure where its coming from seems to be from one of the injector pipe unions? I guess that wouldn't help to make the engine run right!

Hi, ive just done all that with the turbo and maifold as i had lack of power too...be carefull not to break bolts (replace them all anyway is my advice)..def if you can grind down BOTH faces on the turbo and on the manifold otherwise it will leak (check out wiki for good explaination and pics on this very subject) ...whilst i had the turbo off i took manifold off as well and replaced all the studs and nuts and put new gaskets on (incl exhaust paste)...all to make sure i had a really good seal...runs fine now....check also for any small cracks in the manifold or turbo esp where the bolt holes are...oh and clean everything thoroughly when its off so when you put back on again you will be able to see any sooty deposits much better..good luck.
