A 96 golf is most likely a TDI in which case you'll need the ecu etc

Best bet is to look out for an AAZ engined golf or passat 1.9 TD basically the same engine as the 1.6 and is mechanical not electrical injection

The sort of car you'll be looking for is a 1993-1995 Golf or passat (K up to about M maybe early N reg) anything later will be a TDI

Not impossible to fit a TDI but you do need the electrical gubbins
Can personally recommend the 1.9 AAZ TD much better than the wheezy 1.6

Russel at Syncro-Nutz can do immobiler by-pass wiring for Tdi's, I believe... but that's a delivery to Shotts and back... or they can also do mechanical pumps for them (I believe)
