lining out a hightop

Thinking of lining out my hightop - finally. thing is, I wondered if I really needed to ply line it first? Looking in the camper conversion book, it appears leisuredrive just stuck the carpet to the fibreglass on the top of the roof. My uncle seems to think his new autosleeper has its lining just stuck to the roof too.

Anyone done this? I don't really need it lining for warmth as such, just to make it look nice and to stop condensation...

whats best to stick it with if i do this?

also, anyone know where I can get some of the carpet stuff from around bolton/ blackburn/manchester way?

Hi kathy I would go for some sort of insulation then an inner shell of some sort if your skills are up to it. You can use that silver backed bubble foil for ins, I wouldn't use ply out of choice, too heavy apart from bed or cupboard supports. Not sure what to suggesat really seen a few with the carpet stuck on and to my eye it looks pretty shonky.

I've used 1/2" foam under felt like carpet. Worked good. Don't remember what glue I used.

Thing is that if it's not insulated you will get condensation.

I'll be doing our camper in a month or so when I take out back topper storage and make an upper berth. Middle half of topper is paneled now, but will be removing that to install windows.

Hi Kathy,
Quite a lot of conversions just have carpet lining to body work, including the high tops. Only in recent years with more people wishing to camp all year has more insulation been added. My Autosleeper has a carpet lined high top and I don't have a problem with condensation.
I think that when they are lined originaly they are done before the high top is put in place ie they don't have to work overhead. So unless you are any good at papering ceilings I would suggest you carpet it in smallish areas and concentrate on getting close fitting joints.
Glue. Spray on adhesive, B&Q probably the cheapest.
Carpet. Autocraft, Chesterfield. 01246 471199 (got mine from there)
try also Leisuredrive DIY, Manchester 01618322891, Magnum Caravan Surplus, Grimsby, 01472 353520. Nu Venture Campers Wigan, 01942 238560/494090. Reimo Conversions, Manchester. 0161 8391855. Woolies, Peterborough, 01778 347347, (good range but pricy I think). They probably all have websites except Autocraft, Just type in their names.
Alternatives. Carpet from CarpetRight or similiar. Not sure about foam backed and fire regs. Carpet tiles would work if you can find some pliable ones.
Hair shampoo. Needed after sraying adhesive about at high level.

Yeah, Ian, I still have the low down on how you did yours. Just trying to find a quicker way really as I know i'll be crap at doing it with wood first!
may just give it a go with the carpet straight on and see how it fairs... if i ever find time!

what glue do you use to stick the wood to the hightop and the capet? and would you suggest spray adhesive or paint on stuff? how much would i need?

my leisuredrive has 2" of insulation and board then the carpet, guess the later it is the less the quality then?

dont mess about with spray glue, it dont stay stuck long, use a carpet adhesive , or contact adhesive.

mm, i might try and find some kind of insulation, but just need to get it done really. I might put some some wooden batons in and then I can stick carpet on and also some little screws to help hold it in place. Will also add some wooden batons in places i might want to screw thigns to in the future, ir curtain rail in hightop and rails to stop summer falling out of bed etc.

This is how we do it with ply lining with or without insulation and no batterns need fixing to the shell as it all self supports. A bit too complicated to explain and took some working out

ive done mine a bit like timber techs design, using silver bubble insulation and spray glue first, then 6mm ply covered in velour headlining material, looks good.
