Engine Woes! Help Needed!

Well I thought I would take the van for a spin at lunchtime. I store it at work, and the sun was shining :)

On the way back i had back wind and was doing a respectable 60MPH with ease. A lorry came towards me and the force of the wind as he passed made the van slow slightly as per usual.

The lorry pased and the van continued to slow :shock:

No matter if I floored it nothing happened :? Put it in neutral to coast into the layby and the dash lights came on (engine stalled) Back into 3rd gear and the lights went off as the engine was turning, but no power. :cry:

Could this be electrical? It wont start now. It does have a water leak (its a 1.9DG petrol engine) but the level was OK and the temp. fine. I am very confused. One of the directors towed me back to the office :oops: but it will not start.

Any advice would be appreciated. Not sure where to begin!

Stick,,,,,,,,you are gunna have to go through the basics before even starting to point the finger at any one item causing your problem.

Find a friendly sympathetic mechanic who can help you with the basic checks, and you never know it may be something silly like a lack of fuel in the tank which has caused it to stop.

what happens when you turn the key? any clicks coming from anywhere? lights on the dash? check battery terminals clean them up good and tighten

I think the battery is OK. Turning the key, the engine turns over, and tries to fire, but the van seems to shake slightly as the engine is turning.

I wondered having thought about it if it could be the coil not sparking the plugs.?? (On the other hand this may be nonsense!)

I will have a word with a local garage and keep you posted!

check your LT lead in the top of the distributor cap or on the coil, mine fell off and I had the exact same symptoms. if it was a HT lead to the spark plugs it most likely would try and fire, or even run on 3..

ps obviously do not check it whilst someone is trying to start the car, otherwise your hair might start to stick up..

I had very similar problems for months and months, intermitent.

Turned out to be the ignition module.

Hopefully today a autospark / mechanic will be able to shed some light! Checked LT lead and this seems fine.

Hopefully it wont be too serious!

I Had the same problem other day turned out to be the earth cable to the cylinder head on the left working lose on my DG. stuck that back on job sorted. Mine kept baging and poping as i went along as the cable cept touching the block. Shows how such a small thing has a big effect :|

Well I have finallygot to the bottom of the problem :D

The AA man said i had run out of petrol :oops:

However i hadn't been so daft, but the fuel pump has packed up :evil:

Does anyone know if the ones that German Swedish and French are any good.
