OK, I'm probably boring people off their perches here with my endless questions, but just one more for now! I'm looking for my first van and I'm thinking of a pop-top westy. What I'd like to know from you guys is would you buy a 1.9 petrol and convert it to LPG or 1.6 diesel (or TD)?
It seems like the MPG is about the same, and the petrol van would cost about £900 to convert but be about £500 cheaper to buy.
Performance isn't an issue at all, I have another car for getting us around the place quickly. This is going to be a holiday vehicle. As they say, half the fun's in the journey (without calling the RAC).
Any comments?
Cheers
Matt

Hi mattc. I have a 1.6 TD pop top westy. I run this on 60% Waste veg oil, that brings the running costs down a little, runs about 30MPG on mostly short runs to work at the moment. Perhaps the 1.9 petrol has a little more oomph though?
and here endeth the thread.

Two pronged question realy.
The diesel user will tell you that is the best. The petrol user will tell you petrol is best.
Horses for courses mate.
Me !!! I use LPG and petrol as a back up.
At 42p per ltr for LPG I have the best I think.
Engine is 1.9DG getting about 18mpg.

I would avoid the 50 bhp non turbo diesel.
It is infuriatingly slow ...particularly in a camper full of gear and people.
It is momentum driven only, as soon as you lose momentum you're only crawling. Unless you're planning on doing your driving only in flat contryside, I can't really recommend it.
