Syncropendence 4 - Thanks...

Post by HarryMann »

Nice to see a good turnout despite the wet weather...

I think most will agree that the wet weather really 'made' the event special. in several ways.

First the driving... totally different than in the dry, where only so much can be learnt however much driving one does. Cross-slope limits, failed ascents, safe descents and safe winching were covered in some detail - not always in a methodical and planned manner it has to be admitted, but nevertheless, much was learnt. Some great 'wading' was had too, a spectacular and harmless playtime :)

A few short local green lane sections were attempted on the Sunday afternoon, and in quite atrocious rain, was sensibly aborted...

Five vehicles drove the Wayfarer's on the Monday, a well known track through the beautiful Berwyn hills just North of Llanfyllin... interestingly, all were Single or Douible cabs (3S + 2D), making an interesting convoy.

We had some new Syncronaut members, Richard arriving with his ex Mountain rescue 1.9 DG double-slider Syncro, and Ollie with his Subaru Syncro, unfortunately without a propshaft. Once Andy Simpson had spent a few hours getting Richard's difflocks working he was a happy bunny, and after some brief driving induction Saturday, was driving with a big grin all Sunday and Ollie even got a drive on the Sunday...

So making 11 Syncros up on site on the Sunday... quite enough actually :)

===========

Both Roger and Julia and Richard brought their caravans - wise! Russel's and Mark's were the only full campers which coped with their respective needs with ease, though Aidan had a pretty good setup in his...

Despite both light rain and a few heavy downpours, we enjoyed barbecues and campfires on Sat and Sunday night, great opportunity for socialising, and information exchange as usual... Sunday evening turned into a particularly fine and pleasant night relaxed around the fire as a full moon skipped along the horizon behind us ...

Russel (Syncro-Nutz) & Shamsa, Pete (PC52) & Sharon and Mark brought their children, and as children do, they made light of the wet conditions and had more fun than normal playing in the quick to form and equally quick to dry pools outside their campers and tents... and of course, enjoyed the excitement up on the hills immensely.

=============

Many thanks to those stalwarts who helped pack the Syncronauts gear away, and clean and clear the site so well... we couldn't even see where the campfire had been raging barely 12 hours earlier!

He, he, just wait till you see the vids !

Many thanks to the organisers for a top weekend. My first time at that great site, and very interesting to experience those conditions. Thanks to those who helped clear that tree from around my pickup..

The lanes round there seem very promising too, once properly reccied of course !

Yup, was good to see some new faces driving and also to meet a few who dropped by...

Difflock-Dave on Sunday (having finally extricated himself from the Workhouse Festival mire) with his lovely Syncro (just a slightly clicking CVJ seemed the only problem on a good clean van) and Amazing-Dave dropped by too on Monday to meet and greet.

Think no one will mind under the circumstances if we offer special thanks to those who worked hard to make the campfire happen two nights running... burnt every bit of wood we collected and dissapeared it all afterwards..

Andy Mc; Doug; Aidan; and of course Mark's Charlie who doggedly stood sheltering the stuttering fire with an umbrella during a particularly heavy shower early Saturday night... brilliant!

Think we might have a photo somewhere of Charlie out there by himself when the gazebo shelter seemed the best place to be...

Special thanks to Mat for taking every binbag back to Flintshire for disposal - looked like his single cab's loadbed was full to me - quite a sight
:D

Thanks for a great weekend everyone !

Nice to see faces old and new, it was a good crowd.

There were indeed many lessons learnt. Straight from the off I learnt about the limitations of a two and a half ton camper with no rear diff lock  but then i learnt what a useful tool the winch is 8)

I also learnt how dangerous wet grassy slopes are. There must be a term for that phenomenon when your van turns into a sledge going sideways, wipeout comes to mind but perhaps slideout will suffice ?

and on sunday I learnt how useful it would be to carry a hand saw to cut down some heavy dead wood that was hanging precariuosly and blocking my track.

At that point i learnt that nothing seems too much trouble for clive who after a quick call came to assist with the necessary carpentry tools and skills :ok

Overall i keep on learning about what a great crowd the syncronauts are and i'm looking forward to next meet up later in the year; perhaps Ollie will make it with a 4wd next time :D

Get the pictures up !

A simple pruning saw is indeed a handy tool.... :)

Some more that have come to light:-

8 metre long towing strops (to stay on safe ground when recovering)

Someone with a winch at wet events (God bless Russel and Mark for turning up)

CB radios in as many cabs as possible (mobile phones just don't cut it !)

Maybe a hand-winch and a ground anchor

Oh! And Julia's cakes, weren't they really yummy again - :ok

Will post pics as soon as I've sorted out the mess PictureProject made of downloading them - some how they have got mixed up with CtoC.
Any recommendations for image handling software?
Just like to add my thanks to all the 'attendees' that made it such a memorable weekend and my commiserations to all the souls who suffered at the Work House - although the local tractor owners had a 'field' day! (Those who were not 'attendees' (shame on you) will not understand the last remark).
