Needs tightening!!!!!!!
I use the "grip the longest part between thumb and forefinger and try and twist it 90 degrees.. if it turns easy, its too loose and if its very hard its too tight.." method..

fan belt squeal 2

Post by colynmac »

Ok did as recommended but still squeals for twenty seconds or so at start up then stops.

Could it be the water pump or altenator??.

Any help appreciated

I would try removing the belt - turn the water pump and alternator by hand adding side pressure like the belt and see what you can hear. Also check for movement in the bearing .. excessive bearing clearance could cause squeal.

Try pouring a little water on the belt when you start it. If it goes quiet that will eliminate the pump etc.
I have noticed that some belts are worse than others for noise. I have one at the moment.
