1y in but gearselector issue help please

Post by graeme1210 »

Fitted in my 1Y engine replacing my CS 1.6 this weekend which went quite well - ran out of time though due to a stuck bleed nipple on the clutch slave and some dodgy manifold bolts. I still need to reconnect driveshafts, bleed the clutch etc before I go anywhere but I have hit another potential problem...

The 1Y came out of another t25 and already had a gearbox fitted so I dropped out my original engine and gearbox in one lump and simply replaced it with the new one.

I have found that the gear selector rod is not long enough as the selector ball on the gearbox is slightly higher and further back than on my previous one.

See photo here:

Sorry if this is really obvious but it only came to light at the end of the day and I did not have time to check it all, I need to get it running next weekend when I go back home to finalise the other bits.

Can the selector rod adjust to fit - or do I need a new one? If so any ideas on where can I get one. I'm in London, vans currently in Camberley Surrey

I know someones going to ask me for the box codes but I haven't found them yet, but I can get someone to check for me if necassary (the van's at my parents place on ramps at the moment)

What years?
I heard the early 4 speed has a different length rear shift section to the later 5 speed.. but dont know for sure.. measure the distance on you old box from the front mounting plate and compare..
doubt there is more than 25mm of adjustment on the centre uj..

Thanks, put the same question on Brickyard and Baxter reckons I should use the original box and keep my selectors as is. I'm going to take his advice.

My van is an 81 so it looks like I do have the shorter shift mechanisms.

Live and learn.

I'll spend another weekend under the van then...

Cheers
