Advice please! Replacing exhaust system and the LPG probe

Post by stevewright76 »

The situation:
Right - my exhaust system (air cooled - one heat ex cracked, other very very near to and been spot-welded a few times) is knackered and popping worse than scooch at eurovision... It's origianl so 25yrs old, the gaskets are WELL gone, and the whole thing is fused and rusted together plus the tail pipe snapped in half a little while back as it's rusted through. It's the only biit on the underrside in this kinda condition, but in that condition it is... Only bit in decent nick is the silencer but whether that will be separable from the other bits is a big question...

I'm not doing it myself but taking it to Volkstech - who are air cooled but not LPG specialists.

The Solution(?) pt 1:
Replacing the whole thing (heat exchagers, gaskets, tail pipe and pos silencer as well) looks likely to be the easiest way - take the whole system off, replace it with shiny new system, bolt it back on. All very easy apart from... the probe in the silencer...

The question(s):
What's best thing to do when taking the system off - i.e:

1 - where's best to disconnect the exhaust probe? I.E. which set of nuts to undo, any suggestions? Any DON'T TOUCH THAT BIT warnings?

2 - If the silencer won't come away from the rest of the system what's the best way forward? Here's 3 thoughts so far - with queries. OTher ideas/suggestions welcomed!!!

a) Get a new silencer, cut probe out of existing one and insert in new silencer? (How to remove, how to weld back in?)

b) Order a new probe (what are they? where from? how much? who needs to fit this sort of thing? e.g. CORGI/LPG specialist only?) and weld/fit this into new silencer and then reconnect to system?

c) Switch to petrol, take system apart, disconnect probe, ft entire new exhaust system, drive to Chester and get Steve to fit the probe in and check the whole system over? Safest I'm sure BUT a lot of hassle - and will it even work with the probe disconnected?

Help and experience REALLY appreciated. THis is gonna cost me a lot of money anyway as new heat ex units ain't cheap!!! Stretching myself to do it but it needs doing- just don';t weant expensive extra probs or danger as a result!

Thanks in advance for all help!!!

iwould change the lot if you are spending that much another few quid for the silencer won't make that much difference but will save you hassle in the long run.....

switch the gas off at the tank isolator and disconnect the gas pipes at the probe itself and cut the silencer in a square around the probe boss after removing the probe from the boss.

you will need to punch a hole through the baffles in the new silence for the probe with a long pointy thing, DO NOT USE THE PROBE
and reweld the boss back in. sounds worse than it is!
