Sure this is a common question, so if anyone can refer me to a previous post/wiki page that would be good as i cant find one, or a reply would be fantastic.

water in petrol tank
If you mean water in your petrol tank this plagued us for ages.
First garage couldn't diagnose why we kept breaking down. Kept doing other things and charged us for them too.
2nd garage found the water in the tank, drained it and said it had been put in there on purpose. We thought the previous owners must have done it and hoped for the best - till we broke down again!
Third garage found that the breather(?) pipe behind the front wheel on the drivers side was perished. Every time it rained while we were driving water and dirt came off the back of the wheel and into the tank.
I'd recommend getting it in to a garage, getting the tank completely drained, the pipes blown to check for holes and your carbs checked too. Save yourself the trouble we had for 6 months!!

2 posible reasons
1 top of tank rotted out. easy but pricy fix
2 rubber seal between filler neck and petrol cap rotted. cheap easy fix
good luck.
vw or www.brickwerks.co.uk
if its the filler neck seal order a new retainer as it will be rotten too!!!
