Aircooled Oil

I went to GSF in Trafford Park today to get some service gear for my van-2ltr Aircooled auto. Anyway, they guy behind the counter gives me a tin of Millers 30 grade oil and says he's been selling it to VW owners for years, and was in fact what the engines were originally built to take. Should I give it a whirl or not is the question? And will it pump up the hydraulic tappets ok? I could get 20/50, 10/40 etc. but was just curious about using this stuff. Anybody else used it or have any ideas?

sae30 is deffo whats mentioned in the manuals and its what i intend to use when i change mine. perhaps it doesn't hold heat as much as the others or something? dunno why but if it was good enough fer mr porsche its gud enough fer me

i use 15 40 in mine as it is a better oil.
the 30 grade has no detergent in it.

don't quite follow that one? why is it better? 15/40 grade was around in the 70's and 80's but the designer decided the best thing for the Aircooled engine was 30 grade. must count for something. and the homeland of the volky has similar weather conditions to us so it cant be that.

The geezer said it had detergent in it, and because it was a 30 grade it helps to keep all the oilways clean. And it was only about a tenner to buy (£8 something + vat), and it comes in a metal tin. Which is nice. Gonna give it whirl and I'll let you all know how it goes.

30 grade oil can be used in 70s a/c VW engines but there may be a problem with the hydraulic tappets-which were only fitted to the T25 a/c--apparently tho tis not good to use modern multigrades with additives as they not designed to run at the high temp of an a/c engine--you can still get basic Duckams 20/50-also in a metal can which many find a good compromise in VW a/c---

Thinkin about it tho--using semi-synth oil can cause rattly tappets 'cos its too thin so 30 should be ok---

duckhams is great oil but wont mix with ordinary oil i don't think, which could lead to problems if you needed to top up on a trip?
i have a manual for my Aircooled with hydraulic tappets and the oil listed is sae30.
each to his own but i'll follow the book.
