Urgent help with diesel timing

Post by futbus »

I have to find number one on the pump, but the pulley has been removed and there is no keyway in the wheel. There is a woodruff slot in the pump, and a hole in the main pump body, but do I have to guess as to where the pulley attatches? does the woodruff slot supposed to line up with the hole in the pump?

No wild guesses please just genuine answers only, as dont wish to screw the engine up as it only has 70K on it. This is a golf engine AAZ.

If it's a 2-part pulley, the Workshop manual says if the hub itself has been removed from the pump, then its a factory reset.. or words along those lines...

That's if it's is a 2-part pulley in the way they mean it (adjusting the timing on the pulley, not rotating the pump)... I can quote verbatim from Andy McClement's VW Passat Diesel workshop manual if you like, as he's lent it me - and then you can determine if that is what you've got there?

The woodruff key slot point to number one check valve.
Attach to engine.
determine which port is number one.
turn pump till notch lines up with check valve/port.
It will tend to turn backward when you stop turning due to the design of the cam plate inside the pump.

Not come accross that style personally, but I would hazzard a guess that the notch in the pulley is to drop a peg into the pump body to set tdc

Thanks for the replys chaps, It is a 2 part pulley which is the adjustment, as the pump is fixed to the block and cant be rotated. So does this have to go back to a specialist for resetting?

Dave, sorry, memory and busybusy on Coast2Coast event...

Here is the text from the works manual..

The new fuel injection pumps are equipped with a two-part sprocket, idling boost actuator, sender for injection period, valve for commencement of injection and on normally aspirated Diesel engines with a full throttle stop valve.

Removing and installing injection pump..

[Attention!
On no account must the injection pump hub nut -1- be loosened.
Otherwsie the injection pump basic setting will be upset, and it cannot be adjusted with normal workshop equipment]

Setting is as per single-part, basically, but sprocket bots are loosened to allow rotation of pump hub until locking pin can be inserted, rather than the pump securing bolts (no slots in later 2-part pump arrangement)

Hope that helps, so there should be a hub fastened on with a nut at all times...

When installing this pump onto mounting console, tighten the rear conical nut on securing bolt first , then front securing bolts to 25 Nm

The hub is not supposed to be removed form that style of pump, vw dealers scrap them if its needs to be removed. It can be done like simon says but it will be trial and error to set it up but with lots of patience you should sort it.
